NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:
Spencer Schwandt of Napa connected on a penalty kick with 20 minutes to play, giving the San Francisco State men’s soccer team a 2-1 win Friday over visiting Cal State San Marcos.
Schwandt, a starting forward/midfielder, was fouled in the penalty box. It was the third goal of the season for the 2006 Vintage High School graduate.
He was All-Napa County his senior season at Vintage and Second-Team All-Monticello Empire League as well.

Southern Oregon University junior linebacker Kevin Harrell tied for the team lead in tackles with 11 in the Raiders’ 35-3 loss Saturday to Western Oregon in Ashland.
Harrell, a Vintage graduate, was the 2005 Napa County Defensive Player of the Year. At Vintage, he set school records for tackles in a year (140) and career (356). He was a three-time First-Team All-Monticello Empire League selection for the Crushers.

Jason Lehman of Napa caught a 10-yard touchdown pass with 11:29 to go in the fourth quarter for Occidental College in a 28-15 win over the University of Redlands in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Saturday night.
Lehman, who went to Justin-Siena, had two receptions.

Napa’s Ryan Kostecka started at slot receiver for Lewis & Clark College in a 76-10 loss to Willamette Saturday in Salem, Ore. Kostecka, a Napa High graduate, made two catches for 53 yards, including a long reception for 36 yards.
Kostecka, in his first game as the Pioneer punter, had 169 yards worth of punts, averaging 33.8 yards per boot, twice pinning Willamette inside the 20-yard line.

Napa Valley College volleyball coach Kelly Van Winden will be the guest Saturday of the “KVON Sportsvine.”
The hour-long show, hosted by Terry Simpkins, Charles Kennedy and Mark McLeod, starts at 9 a.m. on KVON 1440 AM.

Weber State roverback Ryan Galovic had five total tackles (two solo stops and three assists) in a 35-12 Big Sky Conference win Saturday over Montana State in Bozeman, Mont.
The game was played in a light snow with winds up to 35 mph and a temperature of 29 degrees.
Galovic starred at both Napa High as a two-time All-Monticello Empire League and All-Napa County player, and Santa Rosa Junior College, helping the Bear Cubs to a share of the Northern California Conference title and a win the inaugural State Center Bowl over Reedley College.
He’s one of Weber State’s defensive captains. The rover position is similar to a weakside linebacker.

Marquis Hundley, a starting cornerback for the University of Arizona, had four total tackles (one solo and three assists) in Saturday’s 24-23 loss to Stanford in Pacific-10 Conference action.
Hundley is a Napa High graduate and also played football for Santa Rosa Junior College.

Kyleigh McAhren of Napa had three kills and two defensive digs for the Bucknell University volleyball team in a 3-0 loss Sunday to Cal State Fullerton.
In last week’s 3-0 Patriot League sweep of Colgate, McAhren had eight kills and a .385 hitting percentage. The Justin-Siena graduate also had two service aces, two defensive digs and four block assists.

Redshirt senior Anna Cmaylo of Napa posted 11 kills and five total blocks to lead the No. 20 Santa Clara University volleyball team to a three-set sweep of the University of Portland Thursday night. The final set scores were 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.
Santa Clara remained undefeated in West Coast Conference play with a 3-0 sweep of Gonzaga University Saturday. The final set scores were 25-23, 25-19, 25-19. With the win, the Broncos improved to 12-3 on the season and 4-0 in WCC action.
Cmaylo, a Vintage graduate, was named as the WCC’s Player of the Week on Oct. 6. The honor was her second of the season and third in her career. The middle blocker led the team with a 41.7 hitting percentage, four service aces and nine total blocks. She previously received the honor on Sept. 22.

Brian Cole of St. Helena finished 121st for the Williams College men’s team at the New England Cross-Country Championships Saturday near Boston. Cole was the sixth runner for Williams and finished in 26:28 for the 8K race. Williams placed eighth out of 47 schools.
