Holman leads Crushers to water polo win
Liz Holman had five goals, two assists and five steals as the Vintage High School girls water polo team beat Benicia in the Cunningham Aquatic Center in Vallejo, 15-1, Thursday.
The Crushers were ahead 4-0 in the first quarter, 11-0 at the end of the half, and 13-0 as the third period expired.
Katrina Husted had three goals, one assist, three steals and a caused kickout; Brooke Obranovich had three goals and four steals; Corinne Schafle had two goals, two assists and three steals; Brittany Murdock had two goals, two assists and two steals; Mackenzie Whittaker had a goal, assist and two steals; Katherine Pella had two assists and two steals; Lexi Baldwin had an assist; Corinne Schafle won all four sprints; and Stephenie Frye had eight saves in goal, one assist and three steals.
The Crushers scored most of their goals in the first half on counter attacks from either steals or blocked shots, and added several goals from center from several players in the second half.
“The girls played good defense and that created many of our offensive opportunities,” said coach Julian Szmidt. “I was very pleased with both our offense, as it involved nearly every player scoring a goal, and our defense that created the those opportunities.”
