Hundreds come to Clinic Ole for health fair

The parking lot at Clinic Ole is normally a place where patients park, but on Sunday afternoon it turned into something more.

A Bi-National Health Week health and wellness fair was in full swing on the grounds of the clinic Sunday, bringing together 36 local nonprofit and assorted agencies and linking them up to 300 or more prospective clients.
Now in its fourth year in Napa, Bi-National Health Week doesn’t take place during a week; it’s comprised of multiple events that take place throughout the year that increase Latinos’ access to health care and services. Sunday’s health fair is the biggest event during Bi-National Health Week, providing 250 health screenings including bone density, glaucoma, blood pressure, cholesterol and a plethora of others.

“Every year we try to focus on a different health topic,” said Catalina Chavez, Bi-National Health Week coordinator. “(This year it’s) obesity and nutrition.”
Fellow coordinator Elba Gonzalez said the theme was appropriate given that “statistics have shown that one out of every five Latinos is overweight or obese.”

Five-year-old Roxanna Rubio was staying one step ahead of the obesity statistics as she was fitted for a new bicycle helmet that she won in a raffle at a bicycle safety booth provided Napa County Bicycle Coalition.
Parents Refugio Rubio and Ana Maria Dominguez watched proudly as volunteer, Sandy Houck, fitted Roxanna with her new helmet. Rubio and Dominguez heard about the health fair through Clinic Olé they said.

“It’s important to learn about all the resources (and agencies) that are available to help us,” said Dominguez.

Many of the volunteers manning the booths Sunday were flush with potential clients, due in part to a passport system that was initiated by coordinators. Upon registration into the fair, participants were provided with passports that required them to visit some of the vendors and ask them five questions about their organization.

At Puertas Abiertas’ booth, coordinator Frances Ortiz Chavez asked individuals a question of her own, “What are your dreams for the future?” Chavez, who is also a local artist, wrote their dreams on a pieces of paper that she plans to use in the construction of a Native American dreamcatcher, she said.

Inside the clinic, volunteers from Queen of the Valley Medical Center, St. Helena Hospital, Kaiser Permanente and other agencies attended to the 250 or more patients who sought health screenings. Outside some of participants danced and did exercises on a makeshift stage.

Bi-National Health Week resumes in November with a Citizenship Fair to be held in American Canyon.

" The article says: "Rubio and Dominguez heard about the health fair through Clinic Olé..."

Wait a minute... I use Clinic Ole and I wasn't notified of any health fair. I'm not Latino. Did they only notify patients in the Latino community? I'll have to call and ask. "

" Clinic Ole says that they used flyers and posters to advertise for the event, which was open to anybody. They also said that the flyers were out late this year and apollogise to anyone that missed the fair and wished to attend. They are working on a mailing list for all patients for future health fairs.

What a first-rate group of community people! "

That is a very telling statement. I have 11 more days to go until I write a 1K+ check to Kaiser for one month of my family's health care, free would be nice!! Seems like if everyone paid their fair share maybe that monthly bill would be reduced. I understand that emergency health care is a minimum requirement that everyone should receive, just have a problem when certain groups use it as primary care at the expense of honest tax paying people. " Funny... Just to see what happens, wrote one comment knocking Clinic Ole and another praising them ( I personally think they do a great job) and only one gets published.

Gosh! Everything is so shiney and happy at the Napa Register! "

" I wish I was part of the "us" who could qualify for help from these "free" resources and agencies. Unfortunately, I pay for my own health insurance. "

" If you are not illegal, you don't qualify. If I use Clinic Ole' I have to pay. I don't have insurance, and I'm WHITE! Resources for a certain breed!Free only to latino's. What a joke. "

" Here's a thought, that will never fly, why don't we as a nation set it up so that all who want to accept illegals in this country get to have their taxmoney go to that? The others who don't want to support illegals wouldn't be taxed for that purpose. Same with the liberals that don't want the death penalty have them taxed to support the murderers for as long as they live in prison. It wouldn't take very long to realize just how many people actually support these issues if we were taxed according to our beliefs. Our country continues to be drained of our resources and taxes to support illegals. It's a real shame that our gov't continues to ignore the problems. "

" i'm a latino person and I was not aware of the fair going on. I also have to pay every time I go for a visit. Not all people attending Clinic Ole are illegals and have everything paid for. "

" Can I get a pat on the back for my taxes subsidizing this free healthcare?
I agree with jonb3333,
There's latinos on my buddies street that the kids get free lunch at school.
Even though both parents have jobs own their house and both drive less than 2 year old cars!
BTW,
What the heck is "Bi-National health week"?
I don't hear about an over-abundance of Irish, Italian, English, Canadian, etc. filling up Clinic Ole. "

" Great idea 109823!
I'd bet all those liberals that have always had jobs that health care was included would think twice if their healthcare was taken from them and they had to pay for it out of pocket without a pay increase!

Answer: No, the rest are at the QVH getting free services! "
