American Canyon seniors may get a place of their own at the city’s old police station — if the community manages to raise $1.5 million, the American Canyon City Council decided Tuesday.
The council rejected an option proposed by Rick Hess of R.H. Hess Development to rent space for a center at Canyon Plaza, the commercial and office complex off of Highway 29.
Hess owes the city about $100,000 for a land deal to build the second phase of Canyon Plaza. Under Hess’s proposal, the note would be offset by $75,000 for two years’ rent on a space for seniors.
While council members seemed open to Hess’ idea because seniors would have been able to open a center within months, residents at Tuesday’s meeting said seniors would prefer moving into the old police station off of Elliott Drive.
Resident Cori Badertscher noted the suite Hess offered to the city needs improvements. Hess estimated the improvements would cost $15,000.
The council voted unanimously to move forward with a capital campaign to raise money for a center on Elliott Drive.
So far, no money has been raised.
City Manager Rich Ramirez said that a nonprofit organization would be selected to lead the campaign.
Badertscher also asked why Vice Mayor Cindy Coffey did not step aside from the discussion, saying Coffey has business ties with Hess.
Coffey countered that she is a consultant for a business at Canyon Plaza and does not rent space from Hess.

Go ahead, put these pople back in office. Let’s spend more time discussing the issue rather that doing something about the issue.

But if she were to step aside wouldn’t the whole city council have to step aside? Don’t they, as city representatives, approve our business relationship with Hess? I mean does not the City rent from him and doesn’t he owe us the city money?
I'm just asking. And this is not a putdown I'm just following logical conclusions.

Musik there is no mess here, its wonderful for the seniors, I also see it that there is light at the end of tunnel with respect to this needed facility for elders. The elliot location is a better choice for them, not the hess idea, elders need their own unique space!!!So hope many businesses and families help get this project underway by simply donating or help seek the donations by telling all, its for everyone....one day "
