Baseball Academy seeks players

The Lamorinda Baseball Academy Titans are seeking players to tryout for their travel team for players 14 years of age and under.

The Lamorinda Baseball Academy is holding a 10-week fall baseball program for players 14 years of age and younger who are interested in receiving college-level coaching from a team of former college and professional players who coach the LBA teams at various age levels. Florida Marlins catcher Jon Baker, a former Cal star, also takes part in coaching the various age groups in the off-season. The summer season will begin in February 2009 and run through July.
The Lamorinda Baseball Academy Admirals, the 13-under team, finished in the top 16 nationally in a 94-team tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y. in August.

LBA currently includes some of the top players from Contra Costa and Solano counties, but hopes to involve more area youngsters interested in the competitive, tournament baseball seasons. For more information about the fall programs or any age group, e-mail: tyren22@hotmail.com.
Napa City Golf battle set Nov. 8-9

Registration is under way for the 2008 Napa City Golf Championship that will be held on Nov. 8-9.

Entry fee is $100 per player and includes two rounds of golf, warm-up practice balls, prize fee and awards. Cart is optional at $14 per player. Caddies can be used. A special practice round rate of $25 per player is available.

Entry deadline is Nov. 2 at 5 p.m. Refunds will not be made available once the deadline has passed.

Tee times will be available after 5 p.m. on Nov. 6.

There will be competition in Championship Flight (scratch) and Senior Championship Flight (scratch) for players age 55 and older. NCGA official points will be available for players in both flights.

Youth basketball registration to tip off

The Napa Optimist Youth Basketball sign ups for boys and girls begin this week.

There will divisions for boys in eighth and ninth grade and girls from grades seven through 12.

Signups begin Wednesday Oct. 15 from 6-8 p.m. at the Napa Valley College gymnasium.

There will be other registration sessions Oct. 18 and Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon.

The registration fee will be $60 for the season, which will begin in November and extend into February.  After October 25, late registration will be $70.  All athletes need to provide the league with their health care insurance information.

 High school girls, who later decide to play for their school team, will receive a refund on their registration fee.

 Middle school boys will play on Saturdays at the Napa College gym, while the girls’ league will play Sundays at the same location.

St. Helena Harvest runs Oct. 18

The St. Helena Harvest Festival run will be held Oct. 18, starting and finishing in front of the Carnegie Building at the corner of Oak and Adams streets in St. Helena.

There will be a one-mile fun run for kids, as well as a 5-kilometer event to support the St. Helena’s Soroptomist Club’s effort to help women and girls in the area.

The one-mile run for children 11 and under starts at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $13 in advance and $15 on race day.

The 5-kilometer run starts at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $20 in advance and $25 on race day.

Registration forms are available at Sportago, St. Helena Cyclery and the St. Helena Recreation Department.

The top men and women age group finishers in the 5K will receive a $25 gift certificate to Sportago or The Napa Running Company. Top overall finishers will receive gift certificates for a massage at the Napa Valley Health Spa.

All kids 11-and-under will receive a free scoop of ice cream from the Big Dipper.

Participants will receive a non-disposable water bottle and a specially-designed T-shirt.

Napa Raiders cheer squads sparkle

The Napa Raiders  youth football cheerleaders did very well in competition at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The Pee Wee’s Show Cheer Division girls finished in first place. The Mitey Mite Song Pom Division girls were second overall. In the Junior Pee Wee Song Pom Division, the girls were second. The Midget Show Cheer Division girls also finished second.

The next competition is at Sonoma State in Rohnert Park on Nov. 16.

Open gym basketball at city facilities

The city of Napa will host an open gym basketball program at Las Flores Community Center and at Redwood Middle School Sundays through April 5 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Cost is $3 per person. A maximum of 30 players will be admitted to each gym.

 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Players must be 18 years of age or older.

TCA Volleyball Club clinic today

The TCA Volleyball Club is offering Sunday clinics at Napa High School, 2475 Jefferson St., today and Oct. 19 and Oct. 26.

Sessions for the “Wanna-Beez” (grades 2-5) and “Beginners” (grades 6-8 and first-year players in high school) groups will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $25 per clinic.

Sessions for the “Advanced” group (high school players with club experience) will be from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Cost is $30 per clinic.

Fundamental skills such as spiking, jump serving and proper footwork are covered. In seven years, TCA has gone from a small four-team club in Southern California to a nationwide club located in eight cities. It has spots on all of its teams, which include the 10-, 12-, 13-, 14-, 15- and 16-and-under age levels.
