Fire officials have ordered home evacuations Upvalley due to a large vegetation fire in the area of Deer Park and Sanitarium roads northeast of St. Helena.

About 300 acres have burned east of St. Helena in the fire that destroyed two structures on Deer Park Road, CalFire officials said Saturday morning.

Napa ended its fiscal year on June 30 in good shape, but trouble looms, city Finance Director Carole Wilson told the Napa City Council this week.

Fire crews from throughout Northern California were expected to spend Saturday night Upvalley containing a fire that started Friday afternoon when, according to CalFire, a truck ran off Deer Park Road and struck a stone, sparking the blaze.

Stark differences emerged between incumbent St. Helena Mayor Del Britton and his challenger, City Councilmember Bonnie Schoch, during two election forums last week at Vintage Hall and Vineyard Valley Mobile Home Park.

CalFire crews have the upper hand on a fire that has scorched 300 or more acres of brush in the hills east of St. Helena that began on Friday afternoon. Firefighters gained full containment of the Deer Fire, named because the fire originated along a stretch of Deer Park Road, at 6 a.m., Sunday morning.
