Lowering the bar

Dear editor, Watching Sarah Palin in the debate, I couldn’t help feeling embarrassed. Her demeanor was more like a competitor on a reality show than that of a person running for the second-highest office of the land.

Contrary to the pundits who thought her homespun talk and winking and blowing kisses were “cute,” I found it disrespectful for the office she holds as governor, and disrespectful toward the senator with whom she was having discourse. If Sen. Biden had winked, talked saucily, or acted at all homespun, he would have been condemned as being artificial, patronizing and disrespectful. Because she is a woman, Palin used her gender as a tool. That is exactly what women hope not to see in someone in public office.
Calling Sen. Biden by his first name was another attempt at being adorable. I found it distasteful. Obviously, Mrs. Palin tried to use all her charm to cover up for her lack of knowledge of the issues. If Hillary had put on such a show, she would have been pilloried, but of course the expectations would have been set much higher to begin with. When the bar is so low, anything one does that exceeds the lowest expectations comes across as good work — or good acting!

" according to the polls she hasn't swaded any women, the numbers are still the same. This is good news, because it shows that women are obviously smarter than the Republican party thought. So true about the disrespect, "Can I call you Joe", why, because you can not properly pronouce "Biden"? Besides, recent reports show that she abused her power when firing the state official that oversaw her ex-brother-in-laws job. "

" Absolutely! I have been the victim of women using their femininity as a tool against me my entire adult life…and I like it! In all fairness to Gov. Palin, she was never picked by Sen. McCain to sway female voters, no matter how attractive or unattractive they are or no matter how secure or insecure they are in their own “our bodies, ourselves.” Nope, Sarah Palin was selected by Sen. McCain to sway me, the conservative voter concerned that Sen. McCain spends a little too much time reaching across the isle. We’re hoping that Gov. Palin doesn’t hesitate to whisper in his ear from time to time…”Hey buddy, I’ve kicked a few butts in the past, are you next?” "

From what we have seen of her, she appears to be not terribly curious about the world, not well informed and not well read, besides having a sarcastic and vicious streak in her. The report just released on her abuse of power in having tried to have her ex brother in law fired shows it as fact. "

" Kevin, From when it happened:
quote:
"Speaking as an individual and not for her organization, Shelley Mandell, who is the President of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women and a self-described lifelong Democrat, has endorsed Sarah Palin.

At a rally in California today, in front of a crowd of 20,000, Shelly Mandell introduced Palin and she had a lot of VERY good things to say about her.

From CBS

“I know Sarah Palin cares about women’s rights,” Mandell said. “As vice president, she will fight for you. She cares about our children and she cares about women’s lives.”

And then, as she handed over the microphone to Sarah Palin, Mandell said;

“this is what a feminist looks like“

Palin took the stage, thanked Mandell and quoted her Starbucks cup from earlier in the day. Apparently it had a saying from Madeline Albright on the side. And so Palin started off with this…

“‘There’s a place hell reserved for women who don’t support other women,’ ” Palin quoted. “Let’s see how that comment is turned into whatever it’s turned into in tomorrow’s papers.”

How amazingly brave and wonderful is that!

Bravo Ms. Mandell, Bravo Ms. Palin.

NOW needs to be turned on it’s ear!" unquote

Well, how much you want to bet Shelly Madell goes the same way Tammy Bruce did? I have a feeling Shelly will not be with NOW much longer. NOW showed their true colors when they ousted Tammy Bruce for speaking out against Clinton and the whole Lewinski debacle. I doubt they will react any differently to this. Ms. Mandell was speaking as an individual and was not authorized to represent NOW, the NOW PAC or LA NOW in any capacity in connection with a federal candidate endorsement. As NOW President Kim Gandy said upon Palin's selection, "Not every woman supports women's rights." The use of Shelly Mandell's Los Angeles NOW title was apparently intended to mislead the public, and indeed has resulted in local television outlets and internet reports misstating that LA NOW has "endorsed" Sarah Palin or that she has a record of supporting women's rights. This in fact is not the case.
As President of California NOW and as a member and officer of Los Angeles NOW, I can assure you that there is no local or state affiliate of NOW, including LA NOW, which endorses or supports the McCain/Palin ticket. "

The report concludes that the action was a violation of the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act."

Cut.

"In the report, the independent investigator, Stephen E. Branchflower, a former prosecutor in Anchorage, said that Ms. Palin wrongfully allowed her husband, Todd, to use state resources as part of the effort to have Trooper Wooten dismissed.

The report says she knowingly "permitted Todd Palin to use the governor's office and the resources of the governor's office, including access to state employees, to continue to contact subordinate state employees in an effort to find some way to get Trooper Wooten fired."

Further, it says, she "knowingly permitted a situation to continue where impermissible pressure was placed on several subordinates in order to advance a personal agenda."

Here's how we know how hypocritical, and without ethics of any kind the extreme right wingers who inhabit this site are.

If someone named Clinton, Biden or Obama had done something like this, they would be calling for their heads and would be saying how power hungry and vicious the left is as they abused their powers of office.

Of course, that would mean that they are not hypocritical. "

Republicans have a tendency to use the old Karl Rove trick of accusing the other party and candidates of engaging in the very tactics they use to win at any cost, all the time denying what is patently evident to anyone with eyes, ears and a brain.
Americans are finally waking up, however; except perhaps those who still attend the McCain/Palin rallys. For some, I'm afraid, there's no hope. "

" Ah! But Palin's Troopergate problems are not over yet. According to Newsweek Magazine " . . . there could be more land mines ahead" for Palin.
Newsweek 10/11/08, states:

"A new Alaska legislative report finding that Gov. Sarah Palin abused her power and violated state ethics laws spells new trouble for the McCain campaign . . . Special counsel Steve Branchflower's report could lead to fines or legislative action to censure Palin . . . Some weeks ago, the McCain team devised a plan to have Palin file an ethics complaint against herself with the State Personnel Board, arguing that it alone was capable of conducting a fair, nonpartisan inquiry . . . Some Democrats ridiculed the move, noting that the personnel board answered to Palin. But the board ended up hiring an aggressive Anchorage trial lawyer, Timothy Petumenos, as an independent counsel. McCain aides were chagrined to discover that Petumenos was a Democrat who had contributed to Palin's 2006 opponent for governor, Tony Knowles. Palin is now scheduled to be questioned next week, and the counsel's report could be released soon after. "We took a gamble when we went to the personnel board," said a McCain aide who asked not to be identified. While the McCain camp still insists Palin "has nothing to hide," it acknowledges a critical finding by Petumenos would be even harder to dismiss. "
