The arraignment of Stephen Barrios, one of four men charged with the gang-related murder of Ricardo Gonzalez in December, was continued Friday until next week.

Barrios, 19, is being transferred from the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi, where he is serving a two-year sentence for vandalism.
Napa County Superior Court Judge Stephen Kroyer continued Barrios’ arraignment until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Attorney Michael Keeley asked that his office be appointed to represent Barrios. Keeley does work for the Jefferson Law Center, which provides free legal services.
But Kroyer said he cannot do that because he first has to make sure Barrios wants a free lawyer.

“I can’t appoint a lawyer in his absence,” Kroyer said.
On Wednesday, Kroyer granted the request by three public defenders representing three other Napa men charged with Gonzalez’ murder more time to prepare for their defense.

The three men — Raymond Almodobar, 18, Christian Gallegos, 18, and Daniel Ortega, 19 — are scheduled to return to court Oct. 29.

All four men were arrested Tuesday after a 10-month investigation.
