Harrell stars for SOC, snares NAIA honor

NOTES AND QUOTES for a Tuesday in the Napa Valley:

Southern Oregon University junior linebacker Kevin Harrell was named as the NAIA Independent Player of the Week for his performance in a game against Linfield.
Harrell, a Vintage High School graduate, led the Raiders (1-4) with a game-high 13 tackles, including nine solo stops, in a 14-7 overtime loss at Linfield in McMinnville, Ore. Harrell also finished with a half sack for a 3-yard loss and a pass breakup.

Harrell was the 2005 Napa County Defensive Player of the Year.
At Vintage, he set school records for tackles in a year (140) and tackles in a career (356). He was a three-time First-Team All-Monticello Empire League selection for the Crushers.

Southern Oregon returns to action Oct. 11 when it hosts Western in Ashland, Ore.

Solano Community College Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Erica Morrow is ranked 10th all-time for scoring in a single season with 495 points (1999-2000) and eighth all-time for scoring in a career with 834 points (1998-2000).

Morrow, a 1998 Justin-Siena graduate, was All-Bay Valley Conference both years and All-Northern California her sophomore season.

“Solano was the best two years of basketball that I ever had,” said Morrow, 28, who grew up in the Green Valley area of Solano County. “I was constantly challenged and I learned a lot. Those were the two best years of my life. You felt like you played for Stanford.

“That program definitely did a lot for me. We won games. It was good times.”

Morrow played four years of varsity basketball at Justin-Siena.

Also entering the Hall of Fame is Joseph Adamson (football), a 1993 Vintage graduate who played on the Crushers’ 1992 Monticello Empire League title team, coached by Dave Shipp. Adamson, a cornerback, was on the Vintage track and field team as a hurdler and high jumper.

The Hall of Fame banquet was Monday night at the Hilton Garden Inn in Fairfield.

Sophomore Jocelyn Phillips of Napa won the 200 free for the Florida State women’s swimming and diving team, touching the wall in 1:51.99, in wins over ACC rival Miami and Florida Gulf Coast Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla.

Phillips went to Vintage.

The Seminoles will host their first dual meet at the new Morcom Aquatic Center on Oct. 11 against Alabama.

Santa Rosa Junior College (4-1) is No. 17 in this week’s JCGridiron.com Dirty 30 national junior college football rankings.

Marquis Hundley started at cornerback for the University of Arizona Saturday night and had three solo tackles, including one for a five-yard loss, as the Wildcats rolled to a 48-14 Pacific-10 Conference win over Washington in Tucson.

Hundley went to Napa High.

Kyleigh McAhren, a Justin-Siena graduate, had seven kills and a .357 attack percentage as the Bucknell volleyball team beat Holy Cross Saturday, 3-0, in Worcester, Mass.

McAhren is a Justin-Siena graduate.

Macy Jo Harrison started for Oregon State and Rachel Pickett came off the bench for Fresno State when the Beavers and Bulldogs played in a nonconference soccer game that went to two overtimes Friday in Corvallis. Both are Napa High graduates.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Harrison took two shots on goal and Pickett had one.

Saturday’s soccer game  in Portland, Ore., matched two former Napa High players: Whitworth, with Devin Whitmill, and Lewis & Clark, with Rebecca Conroy.

Lewis & Clark won, 1-0, at the Huston Sports Complex.
