Recycled tires used to repave Napa streets

Some three dozen Napa streets will be resurfaced this week with an asphalt-rubber chip seal made from 10,000 recycled tires.

These streets are considered sufficiently intact to benefit from a seal coat to extend their life. Deteriorated asphalt requires a more expensive asphalt overlay.
The asphalt-rubber chip seal will be applied this week, followed by a covering of aggregate rock called “chip.”

Loose chip will be swept up, leaving a rough surface that will be covered by a smoothing slurry seal a week later.
The combination of the two treatments creates a more durable surface, improved skid resistance and longer street life, the Public Works Department said.

Affected streets in west and north Napa are posted with no parking signs in advance of seal work.

" West and north Napa... So THAT's where the city's elected officials live! "

" So if it is recycled tire, how much did the job cost? "

" To MarshaMarsha,
No thats just the streets that are in the most dire need of replacement. The city can't repave every street in town and a lot of streets don't need repaving. This isn't a conspiracy, there paving what streets need it. Your turning a postive into a negative here. Maybe if they were using this money to re-do the yards of only city officials then you might have an argument. "

" I live in west Napa area and my street is getting road work done today. The street was in good condition; we didn't need work done. However the surrounding streets not far from me were pretty badly beaten through the years of wear and tear from driving/weather and roots from trees. I hope neighborhoods who need this work done get it, it looks very nice! "

" More street paving going on and no new taxes. Hooray! So the transportation tax they were going to put on the November ballot really wasn't needed. Makes one wonder why our city council voted for it. "

" To "skippert" - the resurfacing project has a price tag of about $1.2 million. Most of this is being paid from the City's share of gas tax. The City gets about $100,000 as a grant from the State for using the recycled tires to offset some of the cost.

To "MarshaMarsha" - "tiredofcomplainingnapkins" has it right. There is no relationship between this street work and the residences of City officials. Work areas are chosen using a pavement management system. If you go to our website at www dot cityofnapa dot org you will find an item on the front page that shows a complete list of all the sites getting the chip seal treatment. There will also be a number of streets getting a slurry seal treatment the week of 10/14.

To "shangman" - the Register story says "These streets are considered sufficiently intact to benefit from a seal coat to extend their life. Deteriorated asphalt requires a more expensive asphalt overlay." Unfortunately the City does not have the funds to perform all the more extensive repairs needed on the deteriorated streets. The various chip seal and slurry seal efforts are intended to keep more of out streets from deteriorating.

I can be reached at 258-7843 or bmartin at cityofnapa dot org for information on City projects. "

" Dearest Barry Martin and tiredofcomplainingnapkins: Please, for the sake those around you, take that dusty lump called "your sense of humor", wipe it down and put in a fresh set of batteries. It's time.

For you to even suggest that anyone would believe that city officials get their streets paved first indicates the need for a nice vacation somewhere.

Actually, anyone who believes half of what I write indicates the need for either a loooong vacation or a labotomy. I had one of those once: It was either a frontal-lobotomy or a bottle-in-front-of-me, can't remember which... Oh well, whatever it was, it worked!!! "

" To "dwayne" - there is also some seal coat work being done out there on streets that are maintained by the County. The list on the City website only includes streets in the City's jurisdiction. Perhaps those parts of Delpha and Carol are in the County?

To "MarshaMarsha" - my apologies for reading serious instead of sardonic. My job sometimes compels me to check my sense of humor at the door. Sometimes. If I knew you better I would not have made that mistake. I guess I should have made it to Bloggermania II. Meanwhile, I might take you up on that suggestion for a long vacation... "
