Indians bounce back

One thing became certain about the Napa High football team on Friday night: The Indians are never a one-man show.

Napa also showed it can’t be beaten by a one-man show as it overcame a halftime deficit to roll past Matt O’Brien-led Casa Grande 28-10 in front of a packed house on rainy Homecoming Night.
The Indians showed they aren’t even a one-quarterback team. Charles Boyett rushed 18 times for a season-high 103 yards and two touchdowns, and fellow signal-caller Clinton Gorsuch overcame a rough first half in the rain to finish 5-of-7 for 76 yards and another score.

Behind a veteran offensive line reinforced by the return of right tackle Charlie Schumacher from injury, fullback Scott Dinov turned in a season-high 92 yards and an early 9-yard TD on six carries and Logan Hess bulled for another 78 on 15 totes.
“We just wanted to keep pounding on them. We knew we were wearing them out,” said two-way Napa lineman David Smith. “We just wanted to keep doing what we do and come together.”

None of Gorsuch’s completions was bigger than his 50-yarder down the middle to Daniel Burgess, who had one catch for one yard entering the game. It came on third down after the Indians (3-1), who trailed 10-7, forced a three-and-out to start the third quarter and took over at their own 23-yard line. Burgess’ catch in traffic put Napa at the Gauchos’ 26. Boyett took a shotgun keeper to the 15, Hess rumbled to the 1 and Boyett punched it in for a 14-10 lead.
The Indians were 5-of-8 on third-down conversions.

“We’ve been working on it in practice a few times,” Burgess said of the play. “We weren’t planning on running it in the game, but we were in a position where we needed to make a big play and we pulled it out.”

O’Brien was 4-of-8 for 44 yards in the first half, heaving a 7-yard scoring pass to Teddy Osmundson with 1:20 left to give his team its first lead, 10-7. He set it up with an interception of a wobbly Gorsuch pass from his safety position, returning it 43 yards to the Indians’ 10.

The senior went 2-for-7 in the second half, but had both completions as time was running out, and finished 6-for-15 for 95 yards.

“We trusted our corners behind us and linebackers kept the passing and rushing lanes covered and we contained him,” said Smith. “It was a big trust game. We all worked together and it came out good.”

O’Brien also led Casa Grande (2-1-1) in rushing in the first half with 40 yards on five carries, but was sacked twice when his team had its last glimmer of hope, following a missed 38-yard field goal by Max Alvarez with 9:57 left in the game.

Andrew O’Shaughnessy and Dinov each caught the speedster deep in his own territory, forcing a punt to midfield.

The Indians followed with an 11-play scoring drive capped by Gorsuch’s 17-yard scoring pass to Brandon Washington, who leaped above defender O’Brien to make the grab on a fade to the corner of the end zone with 1:02 left in the game.

“They were a tough team,” Burgess said. “We had trouble in the first half, then we had a good talk in the locker room during halftime. We pulled our stuff together and then we really showed how Napa High plays football in the second half, especially during the third quarter. Our defense really stepped up.”

The undefeated Gauchos returned a kickoff for a score just before halftime for a 27-14 lead, then broke the game open with a 6-yard TD run set up by a 45-yard completion, and a 71-yard TD pass.

Napa (1-3) got a 77-yard scoring run from Cody Jensen on the first play of the game, a 33-yard TD pass from Cody Thompson to Daniel Salinas late in the second quarter, and a 1-yard scoring run from Daniel Wieldraayer in the final minutes of the game. Indians coach Nick Tedesco said a fumble, interception and three scores allowed on fourth downs were keys in the loss.

“We are a good team if we don’t turn the ball over,” he said one week after Napa had no turnovers against Vallejo.

" FYI . . . The freshmen team won their fourth straight game Thursday night, 44-18, keeping them UNDEFEATED and increasing their points for/against to 134-34!

Zach Scheinholz ran for 4 TD's and over 200 yards and Alex Ceja scored a TD and a 2-point conversion. The defense, as its been all season, was stifling, with Tyler Moffett leading the way with 3 interceptions! "
