Vote no on Proposition 8

Dear Editor, Thank you for “Your View” on Proposition 8 (“Vote no on Proposition 8,” Sept. 17), the ban on gay marriage. I agree with your editors that all Californians should reject this threat to equality.

I was legally married on June 17 at the county clerk’s office, in front of the rose garden behind the courthouse, after 21 years of living a committed lifestyle.
I don’t believe that any heterosexual marriages were threatened since that day or prior to the 21 years before the wedding. I believe everyone was left unchanged by my wedding.

In lieu of a wedding reception, we held a fundraiser to defeat “No on 8 Equality California” in our Napa neighborhood. More than $12,000 was raised, which is a stunning amount. I believe the turnout and generosity of our friends and neighbors came from the understanding that this proposition is unconstitutional and that makes it everyone’s concern.
I know that it is always with good intentions that many of you write or speak of gay people deserving or earning equal treatment under the law. It is always interesting to me when I hear people say that we “deserve” or “earned” it. Nobody earns or deserves equality; It’s our given right. We just want to keep it that way. Equality for all of us.

If inclined to donate to the campaign, please visit their Web site at www.egcal.org.
Thank you again for your stand to protect the rights of all Californians. Vote no on 8.

" Vote yes on prop 8. Those on the left love to praise "multicultureism" "respect other peoples Beliefs" unless of course it clashes with their views. Marriage should be between a man and a woman, it always had. If the homosexual community wants equal rights, by all means they are entitled to it. But respect the heterosexual couples wishes and leave marriage alone. Marriage is the RELIGIOUS bond between a man and a woman, until the government stepped in and made it something it never was supposed to represent. YES on PROP 8. "

" Kim, congratulations! (or is it "good luck" or "best wishes" or...? Miss Manners, help me out on this one!) In any case, I don't believe my marriage is in jeopardy because you were finally allowed to marry. 21 years?! That's a lot longer than many (most?) heterosexual relationships last. The high rate of divorce is what we should be alarmed about. Again, congratulations. "

" I'll vote no on 8.

Not because I care one way or the other about "gay" marriage.. (shouldn't all marriages be gay and happy occasions?).

No, because government does NOT belong in our lives and should NOT mandate whether we can pledge ourselves to our partners for a lifetime. No, because its is just plain discrimination.
No, because what right do we have to deny Joy to anyone?
No, because the religious right is usually wrong. (the religious left isn't right any more often, either.)
No, because it is simply the correct thing to do. "

" what's your secret, Dwayne? Only people AGAINST proposition 8 seem to be allowed to comment. (At least all my comments are deleted.)

How do you get posted? "

" Kevin - Why don't you read the guidelines. I am not aware of having anything deleted that I have commented on.

I had no idea marriages were religious only. I guess that explains people getting married at the courthouse.

" I think gay people should be able to experience the pain of divorce as well and the bliss of marriage just like normal people. "

I agree except being homosexual is normal for them. "

" marriage started out as, and in many cultures stills, a property contract....so why not keep both government and religion out of it....if a church doesnt want to perform same sex marriages, then don't.....

but let us intellectually honest about Prop 8, it is designed to do one thing...deny some of our fellow citizens of their rights under the state constitution....and once you start doing that to one group, why not do it to others .... "
