Napa Valley composer Kurt Erickson has completed a commissioned orchestral work for soprano Marnie Breckenridge and the Sacramento Philharmonic. "Chicago Songs" will be premiered Nov. 1 at the season opening concert of the  2008-09 season.

Ticket information can be found on the Sacramento Philharmonic Web site, www.sacphil.org
Erickson described "Chicago Songs" as a 20-minute, five-movement setting of poems found in Carl Sandburg's "Chicago Poems."

"Sandburg's poetry gives voice to Chicago's immigrant class, struggling to find hope and happiness in a teeming industrial city," Erickson said. "Chicago Poems was published when Sandburg was 38 years old; ironically, the same age I am today when I finished this work."
"Chicago Songs" was commissioned in part through funding from the American Composers Forum's Northern California Commissioning Program, sponsored through the San Francisco Chapter of the American Composers Forum.
