Things did not go well for Brian Edward Penland as he drove through American Canyon on Monday afternoon.

When Penland drove to the intersection of Shenandoah Drive and Donaldson Way, he slammed on his brakes to avoid running a stop sign, Sgt. Craig Nickles said.
“He actually didn’t slam on his brakes until he noticed a police patrol unit across the street,” Nickles said.

The officer knew that just minutes before, Penland had passed a school bus that had its stop signs displayed and its red lights flashing, Nickles said.
After running the license plate on Penland’s vehicle, officers discovered the registration tags on the plates had been stolen. “The suspect admitted to the officers he had stolen the tags off a neighbor’s car,” Nickles said.

To add to Penland’s troubles, officers also found an open bottle of alcohol inside his car, he said.
Penland, 52, of American Canyon, was arrested on suspicion of possessing the stolen registration tags, DUI, driving with a suspended license and having an open container in a vehicle.
