A traffic stop for a burned-out license plate light ended with the arrest of a Napa woman on felony drug charges.

Around 12:45 a.m., Tuesday, American Canyon police pulled a vehicle over at Highway 29 and Napa Junction Road for the traffic violation.
The driver, Sandra Lee Smith, identified herself, but did not have any identification, Sgt. Craig Nickles said.

Officers ran her name and age and discovered Smith was on felony probation for welfare fraud, Nickles said. “Her driver’s license had been suspended.”
When Smith reached into her purse for a tissue, a back-up officer spotted a glass smoking pipe inside her purse, he said.

Officers searched Smith’s purse and found a small black pouch containing a baggie filled with suspected methamphetamine, Nickles said.
Smith, 40, was arrested on suspicion of possession of meth, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license and violation of probation.

" It's a new tactic. They make the poor girl cry, so that when she gets a tissue out of her purse, they can peek inside. "
