Gore in Napa for Obama

Former Vice President Al Gore came to Napa Saturday to raise money for the Democratic Party and the presidential campaign of Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

About 200 people paid up to $1,000 to hear the former vice president and Nobel laureate speak at Copia, his first stop in the Napa Valley. Gore then left Napa to attend a fundraiser dinner at Staglin Family Vineyard, where tickets cost about $14,000 per person. About 100 people were expected at Shari and Garen Staglin’s winery.
The two events, both of which were closed to the press, were expected to raise at least $1.6 million.

Gore, who arrived at Copia around 4:30 p.m., where he spoke at the River Court Terrace for about 30 minutes under a sign that read “Obama ‘08.”
As tourists continued to stroll inside Copia, Gore could be overheard as he hailed Obama and railed against the Bush administration’s domestic and foreign policies. Presidential candidate Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., supported those policies 95 percent of the time, he said.

George Washington ordered that enemy forces fighting against American soldiers be treated with dignity, he said at one point. But the Bush administration, which, he said will go down as one of the most misguided in the Nation’s history, instead supported torture.
“I can’t get over that,” he said. “It’s wrong.”

Gore also accused the Republican administration of doing nothing to stop climate change and of squandering the nation’s wealth.

America had the strongest economy and job growth before Bush’s election, he said. But the Republicans allowed short-term greed without restraint, he continued, before calling for the election of Barack Obama and Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del.

“It’s time for accountability! It’s time for change!,” Gore said as people cheered.

Katrina Castner, 16, a junior at Napa High School, was among the Obama campaign volunteers who came to direct traffic at Copia.

Gore was impressive in his knowledge of the issues, she said.

“It was phenomenal,” said the teen, who was able to shake Gore’s hand before he was whisked away.

Dr. Peter Joseph of San Anselmo, a member of Physicians for Social Responsibility who focuses on the dangers of climate change, called Gore’s speech “great.”

“This is probably the most important election in our country’s history,” Joseph said as he left the event. “We absolutely can’t afford another four years of the failed and corrupt policies of the last eight years,” he continued, referring to the Bush Administration.

Among those who spoke before Gore were Napa Mayor Jill Techel and Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, a candidate for governor in 2010.

“This is an absolutely crucial election for America,” said Garamendi, as he waited to leave for the Staglin dinner.

McCain will continue the Republican economic policies — unfettered by regulation — that are ripping Americans off, he said.

“We have got to change, he said.

" Anyone who would consider Al Gore a traiter is so out of touch with reality. No matter what you think of the political atmosphere, to label him a traitor is baseless, foolish and to me, and just another example how such a small minded attitude is ruining this country.

The fact that he would give our small town his time and attention is an honor. "

" Gore, both Clintons, and especially Obama are malignant NARCISSISTS who exploit the people of this country (like this HS student) who don't have "impressive knowledge of the issues". "

" i don't have impressive knowledge on this but here is what i think.

gore knows how to talk about the utilities industry and co2's but he doesn't know what to do about it.

gore isn't going to go and make all the bureaucratic utility companies squeal like fat pigs. you know that. i know that. we all know that.

now that banks have learned they have to stop ripping off the retail bank consumer by using mysterious money laundering tactics to load an account with debt the bank is in a state of disaster. the banks can no longer build CC debt and wires it to the debit card. now there are a bunch of college graduates in NY with 100k's of student debt that can't find banking jobs, and bank CEO's are doing charity fund raisers to keep their reputations in tact. don't get me started on this but the bank basically ripped off people and the people can't pay the bank back and the bank won't give them a job.

if gore wants to take the utilities industry for a ride more power to him, but i think he'd be better of taking a ride in a hot air balloon. "

Sorry to pop your balloon, but ol' Al came here for one reason only...MONEY...!!! Your money....

He's only your friend if he can pick your pocket while you slap him on the back...

Turns out that Napa was on the list of big money donors, not because he wanted to hang out with his Napa pals... Napa's on the Democrat sucker list, not the honor society...... "

" The comments on this site by this club of right wing extremists is enlightening, only if you are not familiar with right wing authoritarians, then it is about as surprising as the sun rising in the east and setting in the west.

"The studies explain so much about these people. Yes, the research shows they are very aggressive, but why are they so hostile? Yes, experiments show they are almost totally uninfluenced by reasoning and evidence, but why are they so dogmatic? Yes, studies show the Religious Right has more than its fair share of hypocrites, from top to bottom; but why are they two-faced, and how come one face never notices the other? Yes, their leaders can give the flimsiest of excuses and even outright lies about things they’ve done wrong, but why do the rank-and-file believe them?"

If interested in learning about the quote above google the authoritarians. I guarantee you it will explain so much of what you read by this right wing extremist echo chamber on here. "

" What's so amazing about this election is that the candidates and their supporters ( on BOTH sides ) have said so much without saying anything about anything except each other. What's even MORE amazing is that people are steadfastly dedicated to the candidates based on all of the nothing that they've said.

It's real easy to say you're going to give us health care, return the middle class, fix the economy, put two chickens in every garage, etc. But the only thing anyone ever says of substance is usually criticism of the other candidate. That's the focus of the media reporting.

Our next President and VP are probably going to get elected on the basis of race, gender, and their ability to criticize opponents. Something to be proud of, but not a change in a positive direction. What's going to happen after the candidate gets elected ? That's a scary thing to me.

We'll start talking about the issues in March. "

" gordon huether - Your welcome. It is an eye opener, to say the least, and it is a 7 chapter book by a leading authority on authoritarianism, free on the internet.

The really scary part is when they play a simulated game, called the global change game.

"Two runs of a futuristic simulation involving introductory psychology students
were held on successive nights. On one night, “Earth” was populated entirely
by right-wing authoritarian followers; on the second night, a small number of
dominating authoritarians were included among a second group of authoritarian
followers. With a few notable exceptions (e.g., nuclear war did not break out),
the future evolved as anticipated on the two evenings. In general, authoritarians
produced dismal futures, beset by unemployment, famine, and disease."

If you want to read about it. Scary stuff!! "
