An Octoberfest success in Napa

Dear editor, On Sept. 7 the Napa German Club hosted an Octoberfest at the beautiful Monticello Winery on Big Ranch Road.

We offered everything you would expect at an Octoberfest; Live music, German food and drinks, dancing and singing. It was a big success.
As president of the club, I was surprised that so many people wanted to come. Perhaps we’ll have to do it again.

Annelie Myall / President, Napa German Club

" It would have been nice to know about it before it happened, rather than after the fact.... :-( "

" Hmmm, interesting that there's no public outcry over this event that celebrates just one nationality. Why is no one saying, "If you love Germany so much, why don't you just go home?" Oh, wait, I forgot. It's just the Mexicans we Napans resent. "

" Why was it in early September? I would have loved to hear about this. "

-It's one thing to celebrate for a day. Nobody complains about St. Patrick's Day, Chinese New Years, or Cinco de Mayo. However, it is another thing entirely to take the biggest community event of the year (the fair), that is supposed to celebrate everyone equally, and elevate one group over others. "Common sense" folk see the difference. "

" Oktoberfest should be celebrated in October like its intended. Why the first week of September ?!?! "

I don't see any Germans overflowing the ER at Queen, or refusing to speak English in our schools, do you...??? No German gang fights either... "

" The German gangs here are CRAZY! Those guys think they're the schnitzel. "

" I wish I would have known about this! I would have been there in a heartbeat. As someone who is descended from Ostfriesland heritage, I would have loved it. How do I get in contact with this club? "

" Okay, so I see two things here: One, that it's okay for an ethnic-/whatever- group to celebrate their ethnicity or whatever-ness as long as it's for no more than one day; and, two, it is okay ONLY if they require little to no(ne) social services. Do I have it right? As far as overflowing the ER at the Queen, I know so many "white" families without insurance (or jobs or spouses, for that matter) with six kids/six fathers (but that's another story) helping to cause "overflow" at the Queen. And refusing to speak English? How about speaking nearly-correct English? That would be nice. No more "I ain't..." or "We don't got no..." Further, what about the "white" couple at the South Target/Home Depot parking lot with their sign "Everyone needs help now and then." She is drinking Starbucks and he is smoking. Compare this with the Hispanic men hoping for a job for the day. No coffee, no smokes; just lunch in a cooler just in case. "

" Way to go, Dwayne. Lump all of one race together. If my high school history books were correct there are some not so great Germans out there as well. So if you have a problem with hispanic events because there are some bad hispanics out there, you should have a problem with any event that focuses on a single nationality since they all have done something terrible at one time or another. Hypocrite? "
