Sally Struthers brings hilarious 'Nunsense' to Lincoln Theater
‘All in the Family,’ ‘Gilmore Girls’ and Broadway star takes the stage
Two-time Emmy award-winner Sally Struthers brings her Mother Superior habit and character to the stage of Lincoln Theater Napa Valley for a night of “Nunsense.” The smash stage show, created by Dan Goggin, comes to the Napa Valley for one show on Wednesday, September 24 at 8 p.m.
“Nunsense” begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of burial funds. The sisters decide to raise the money by staging a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for a production of “Grease.” Characters such as Sally Struthers’ Mother Superior, Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer, and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head, fill this show, which has become an international phenomenon with more than 5,000 worldwide productions. It has been translated into 21 languages.
Writer/director Dan Goggin came to New York to study music as a classical countertenor. He began his professional career singing in the Broadway production of “Luther” starring Albert Finney. While appearing in a comic folk-duo called The Saxons, he began writing. This led to a series of scores for musicals on and off Broadway and his crowning achievement, “Nunsense.”
What inspired him to write the play?
“A Domincan Brother sent me a mannequin in a habit. Everyone commented on her and I decided to design a greeting card with a nun on it. The card caught on and then I had the idea to bring her to life,” said Goggin. “The show is based on five real nuns that taught me in school. They all love the show and have attended it several times. The show has nothing to do with religion, no hidden agenda or message. It is just funny and entertaining and makes people laugh and forget all of the bad things in life for a couple of hours.”
“Nunsense” is one of those shows that just seems to go on and on. According to Goggin, there’s a reason for that. “The show is not set in any certain era or time. It is real time and because of that, all generations can relate to its humor. There is a mystique about nuns and how they live and this show reveals that nuns do have a sense of humor and live real lives.”
“Nunsense,” starring Sally Struthers, plays at Lincoln Theater Napa Valley on Wednesday, September 24 at 8 p.m. For tickets, which range from $59 to $79, contact the Lincoln Theater Napa Valley Box Office, 100 California Drive, Yountville by calling 944-1300 or go to www
