Is Fassel the new Raiders coach?

Just when Oakland Raiders fans are given the false hope the team might be decent comes rumor that head coach Lane Kiffin could be gone as early as today.

Sure, Darren McFadden ran all over the woeful Kansas City Chiefs defense ... then again, JaMarcus Russell threw about as well as George Blanda could have so that’s a good reality check. As if the reality that Kansas City might not be as good as Sacramento State this year isn’t enough.
Kiffin has been begging and pleading to be fired since training camp started in Napa. I sat in on a number of press briefings where Kiffin’s comments were ones that would have had players and coaches alike suspended by the team for that favored catch phrase, “Conduct detrimental to the team.”

Kiffin stood and repeatedly lamented the fact he did not have enough healthy players to have good hard practices.
He constantly stated he wanted something different, but the players brought in to camp was a decision he had nothing to do with.

He went as far as to remind the writers that the Raiders were not a very good football team.
Is this something any NFL head coach says during training camp to motivate his players?

Nope, this is what a coach says when he wants to roam the USC sidelines on Saturdays, waiting for a call from a team needing an offensive coordinator while collecting the rest of his paycheck from Al Davis.

Davis wants Kiffin to quit; Kiffin wants to be fired so he gets the rest of the money in his contract.

Meanwhile, there’s the man who was wandering the training camp sidelines, supposedly only there to check out how his son was doing working with the Raiders special teams players.

Jim Fassel.

What was Fassel — former New York Giants head coach (1997-2003), former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator and yes, a former Raiders assistant coach too — really doing in Napa during camp?

Was he the one smart enough to know Kiffin has no prayer of lasting the season, so a job as an NFL head coach would be coming pretty bloody soon?

I’m no NFL insider, I was just out there shooting videos for 17 days of training camp. What I did see was a team whose coach has very little control of who plays for him, a coach openly expressing more than just frustration, he was expressing a challenge to Davis to fire him.

He ramped up the challenge with the blasting of Davis and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan last week, once again using the media to argue his case that he can’t control this team.

Kiffin is baiting Davis constantly now.

Maybe that’s why McFadden ran so well. He was trying to run away from the infighting.

Can someone out there size Fassel for a Raiders polo shirt for his first press conference as head coach, please? Me might be needing it real fast.

" Al Davis is a nightmare of a man to work for. I commend Kiffin for not cow-towing to him and resigning. Let Davis pay him as he roams someone elses sidelines. He deserves it. "

" Remember, folks, this is just my column poking some fun at the situation.
the online silver and black report is moving on its site a belief that Rob Ryan has already been given the head coaching job and that Kiffin is out "

" I am done as a Raider fan if Kiffin is fired, enough is enough.Davis is a senile old man who doesn't see past his own ego and has ruined a once great franchise into nothing but a team who's headlines belong on the cover of The Enquierer "

" Phaider hang in. Being a die hard Raider has never been easy, but the victories do taste better when they do come. Granted not very often lately (4 years). As to Kiffen... we all apply for jobs with our eyes wide open. That includes ownership track record. He must have, some where along the line, decided that Mr. Davis' management style did not present enough of a negative impact to not apply. He can't sit and whine about it now. If I were Al for a day.... Lane, you are now assigned to the scouting team to fill out your contract. Ryan your in. "

" I wish that Mr. Davis was truly committed to "Commitment to Excellence" in terms of putting together a team that competes at the highest level every year ala Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys and now New England Patriots. I has broken my heart to have been a Raider fan since 1965 to watch what this organization has become. With all of these high draft choices (including those for the John Gruden fiasco), we should have a much more competitive team that this mess that lines up on the field every week for the past 5 years. How about some stability in the head coaching ranks? How about becoming a shut down defensive unit? It would be nice to see a Raider defense that breaks the record for least points/yardage/completions allowed. It would also be great to not be the Los Angeles Clippers of the NFL. When I saw a record where the Raiders are worst than the Arizona Cardinals, you know that we have hit rock bottom. We cannot keep being the worst team in the league and losing to the Broncos and expect fans to continue respecting your organization. If we continue down this road we might as well change the colors from Silver and Black to Pink and Yellow -- this is absolutely insane. Insanity is doing what you've always done and expecting different results. I'm almost at my wit's end with the owner and the organization that keeps allowing Mr. Davis to take this organization to the bottom of the barrell. Please somebody who is close to him, save him from himself -- tell Mr. Davis the truth; save us few Raider die hards who truly love this team. Will somebody please put this team up for sale? "

" You have to be kidding me! Either you have no idea about football or your trying to get the Raiders in a even deeper hole than the already are in.

Jim Fassle *&%$ as a head coach! His players hate him and he has been one of the punching dummies of espn for years.
Kiffin is right when he says the players are old and he doesnt have the right personal-el on the field. You have Davis hiring his old football players who shoiuldnt be coaching these young kids futhermore you have Davis signing people like Walker. COME ON! Walkers is a washed up once good reciever who has off the field problems. You think Kiffin wants to work with that? The guy get beat up cause he want to party all night in Vagas. The guy cant even practice cause he's already dinged up. He rahter play when its game time but his off the field training doesnt apply to in game time.

Media has it all wrong! Kiffin is only bringing out a problem that has not be brought up publicly beofre unless the coach/player is released/retires. Davis is the problem and why the Raiders are not progressing.
Gruden took the Raiders from nothing to something then Davis fires him. The Raiders were not a factor until Chucky came to town, but Davis "Ego Trip Grampa" wasnt going to let him get the credit.

PFFT!!! Im sick of it! The reason I dont buy season tickets anymore. The reason I refuse to sport gear anymore. Not because I dont love the Raiders, but because I cant stand to watch Al drive this team into the ground anymore.

Al did his thing once upon a time but enough is enough! "

" Kiffins done nothing in the NFL, is 5-18 as a head coach. No one was going to offer a head coaching position to this guy. It was Al Davis that gave him the opportunity.

Kiffin comes across as a whiner. From his game with the media needs to grow a pair and become a man. Ryan sounded more like a head coach at his press conference then Kiffin who is always looking to lay the blame on others.

Kiffin as head coach did not have his team ready to play on Monday Night. And Shanahan out coached the kid..

Kiffin has been a distraction since the off season. If his wish is to get fired I would say he is close. Davis could fire him for breech of contract and pay the kid nada.

I mean here is a kid that cannot put together any kind of a passing game, nada in 2 years of being on the job. Yet he has the time to sit around and come up with quotes to the media to undercut his players, coaching staff and the organization.

The guy has done nothing in the NFL, nothing and yet he wants to come across like an Al Davis or a Vince Lombardi. Hell at least 2 games last year were lost because of Kiffin. He handled the roster last year like a real rookie and how many players DID HE decide to bring in that have washed out.

I like the kid and if he would just grow up some and shut his mouth and do his job I think he will be a good coach ONE DAY.

Shut up and do your job or hit the road. "

" As a diehard 49er fan over the span of my 31 years of existence, I can sympathize with a lot of the old time Raider fans...... John and Denise York have turned a once proud franchise into a laughingstock of the NFL with horrible management style and poor desiscon making.... The Bay Area as a whole would be better off without Al and the lousy York family....

Bring Eddy D back!!! "
