NAPA - Lorraine Marie Ladd, 86, was called to Heaven on Sept. 10, 2008, in Napa. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Mary and Manuel Machado; husband Elmer Ladd Jr.; and brother Douglas Machado.

Lorraine was born in Oakland on July 6, 1922, at her aunt’s home. She grew up in Collinsville. Her family then moved north to Birds Landing, where they purchased a ranch to raise sheep, cattle, chickens and geese, and had a small dairy. She graduated from Rio Vista High School in 1940 and then graduated from Mercy Catholic Nursing School in Sacramento, with her degree as a registered nurse. After graduation she worked she worked at the Vallejo Community Hospital as head nurse in O.B. and pediatrics. By then World War II was in full force. She enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps where she served during World War II as a 2nd Lt., being awarded the World War II Victory Medal.

After serving her country she married her high school sweetheart, Joseph Enos, on Dec. 16, 1945. They had one child, Christine Enos Sullivan. On Feb. 14, 1960, she remarried Stockton area farmer and friend, Elmer Ladd Jr., in a small family ceremony. They lived in several California areas such as Stockton, Pebble Beach, Pacific Grove and Carmel Valley, until they made their home in Ione, Ore., where they worked side by side on their wheat, hay and cattle ranch with their two children, Richard and Sylvia. The livestock was Lorraine’s primary focus; at one point the registered polled Hereford herd exceeded 400 head. She worked hard to build the reputation for her breeding stock.
Lorraine was very active in several organizations including Ione Topic Club, Garden Club, Ione Cardinal and Band Club, the Morrow County Fair committee and was a fair board and rodeo court supporter. She was the first Worthy Matron of the joint Ruth Locust Chapter 32 of the Order of Eastern Star when Ione and Heppner chapters combined. She was a lifetime member of the Queen Esther Chapter 101 Eastern Star as her chapter combined with the Hermiston, Oregon Chapter.

Her husband, Elmer, passed away in 1989 and due to health reasons she moved back to California in 1995. She remained active, serving as a board member for the Rio Vista Museum.
A viewing, rosary and service were held in Rio Vista, with a viewing, Mass and final burial to be in Ione, Ore. Services will be at St. William’s Parish in Ione.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ione Topic Club Library Fund c/o Ione Topic Club, Ione, OR 97843.
