McCain mailer has Dems calling Tuteur to confirm registration

A campaign fundraising letter got people on the horn in Napa County in recent days, but not in the way Republican presidential candidate John McCain might have hoped.

About a dozen registered voters contacted the Napa County Elections Department after receiving a letter from the Republican National Committee stating that the recipients were registered Republicans and asking for their help with the McCain campaign.
The problem? Many of the recipients of the letter were Democrats.

Several called Napa County Registrar John Tuteur — both to make sure they hadn’t been registered incorrectly and to register a complaint about the mailer.
“Our office has been inundated with calls from voters who believe that their registration information is incorrect in our files,” said Napa County Registrar John Tuteur, in a prepared statement. Tuteur said the voter rolls are accurate, but that the mailer was not.

“This presidential election is too important to have either party sending out confusing material,” said Tuteur.
Republican National Committee staffers did not return calls and e-mail seeking comment by press time.

The letter states, “Right now, we have you registered as a Republican, living in the Napa area of California. Is this correct? Generally, can we count on your vote and support as a Republican than a Democrat on Nov. 4?”

The letter than encourages recipients to return a “Party Affiliation Voter Registration Card” and contribute to the McCain campaign.

Tuteur noted that he received one of the letters at home, as well.

“The only voter registration record should be our records,” said Tuteur. “The complication was they were confirming the party’s records.”

" Napa County Registrar John Tuteur said the voter rolls are accurate? A few years back his office had me listed as registered in southern California, even though I hadn't even visited there in over twenty years. I had to file a "provisional" ballot at election time. My vote was probably never counted (like many of the absentee votes never being tallied by his office if they "don't make a difference in the results"). "

" It is preposterous to think the McCain campaign might intentionally waste precious resources attempting with this letter to trick Democrats into thinking they are Republicans. It is simply ridiculous.

The odd part of this is how quickly it made it to the front page of the paper. I received calls from Hillary Clinton’s campaign during the Presidential primary claiming I was a democrat. I wrote it off to a simple mistake. Not some dirty trick worthy of front page news coverage.

" Yes, I am a registered Republican and received an Obama mailer asking for money. Just throw it away if you don't like it. "

Was the RNC behind the solicitation letter I got from Obama? Stuff happens. Get over it. "

" What is different is that this is not a phone call but an envelope that goes through the federal mail service.

It claims that the recipient is registered as Republican; is this happening to people of all parties, Republicans too?

If the person is registered in a different party and returns the "Party Affiliation Voter Registration Card" how can it affect their registration or vote (what's the purpose)?

Because, I'd read the virtually the same information or "press release" when I googled SarahP, hours before McCain officially announced her as his running mate (even at Wikipedia), then, had already read the "...lipstick being the only difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull..." line within the NVR blogs, prior to hearing it from SarahP during the RNC, I'm wondering... will there be any truth to what is released by the RNC or promoted by the media? "

" Hmmm, I am a registered Republican and I did not receive the letter. I feel slighted.

I certainly hope this incident isn't the same kind of trickery that Obama's campaign has been using.

Regardless, I'm still voting for McCain. "

" Today we all heard about how John McCain is trying to divert attention from real issues by using Karl Rove tactics in trying to drum up controversy with the "Lipstick & Pig" phrase. We should all expect them to continue these tactics up until election day. The question we should ask ourselves, will we be fooled again? "

Please list the "trickery" being used by the Obama campaign.

Thanks. "

" Dear Doug,

Have you always been registered as a republican at your current address?

If so, I would think it is strange to receive a political piece from a Democrat don't you?

Just as I would think it is strange for a Democrat to receive one from a republican.

By the way, good luck in November with McCain winning Napa County.

You will need it. "

" I would almost like to change my party affiliation just so I would not receive all those campaign calls. I also received that mailing from the Republicans. It is very misleading and a pretty underhanded tactic. "

" Bauhausfan...in Texas there were complaints of Obama's group calling people and pretending they couldn't clearly read their caucus vote saying it appears you voted for Obama but just want make it more clear on the sheet that you did or something to that effect. They really had voted for Hillary but were made to think they had made an error.

And didn't Obama win in the caucus states? Hmmm... "

alwayscurious wrote on Sep 11, 2008 12:17 PM:

" Has anyone seen the mailing? Does it have a "DO NOT FORWARD-RETURN TO SENDER"? Then, it is returned to sender(RNC). The voter might be eliminated from the voter rolls and prevented from voting in Nov.... a la Florida 2004. "

" If anyone has one of these mailers intact?

If so I would like to talk to you. "

" First, the story says "About a dozen registered voters contacted the Napa County Elections Department..." then goes on to give a NUMBERLESS statement of "...Our office has been inundated with calls from voters..." and in a PREPARED statement... Pray tell us, was there a return address? Did the correspondence show cancellation markings? Did it look professionally done, or on someone's old typewriter? This whole story doesn't sound right when read in its entirety. It sounds like a stirred up non-issue to me. "
