12:30 p.m.Highway 12 will have night lane closures this week — 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. ending Friday — in the area of highway construction near the intersection of Red Top Road and Highway 12 in Solano County.

Eastbound lanes will remain open during the week, but motorists should expect delays due to construction traffic. Caltrans recommends avoiding the area altogether by taking Highway 37 to I-80.
Caltrans is building a 1.2 mile truck lane on westbound Highway 12 in Solano County. According to a statement from Caltrans, trucks ascending a grade of road after leaving 1-80 slow other traffic behind them. The new lane will help speed traffic along Jamieson Canyon Road. The lane is expected to be completed this fall with a price tag of $7 million.

" I wish part of that project would be to close the Highway 12-Red Top Road intersection. That is a horrific intersection and I've seen many bad accidents there over the years. People attempting to make lefts off of Red Top Road onto Highway 12 are taking their lives in their hands. Closing that off would save lives and people would adjust and take alternate routes. "

" This is a good time for truckers and auto drivers to get used to taking American Canyon Road and drive on down to HWY 29 then drive on the highway through American Canyon. As soon as Newell drive is connected that will be a great cutoff. American Canyon Road is never backed up, there is almost no cross traffic and it has a great on & off freeway ramp. Its only 6 miles farther but it is faster and less dangerous. I recommend it for families who fear having their kids on Jameson Canyon Road and for truckers who want to get through faster. "

" i agree with southnapa, that intersection is a killer. "

" Can't wait for this project to get completed. How about we now start at this end of the road? Gee 1.2 miles of widening every 8-12 months and we might done by 2015????? "

" Yeah, what SouthNapa said. It's a death trap. "

" American Canyon Road to Hwy 29 is not a truck route, nor is Flosden Rd between 37 and Am Cyn Rd. And if you think that there is never a backup on AC road you obviously don't live in AC, or travel during the commute hours. Trucks are not allowed on AC road from Hwy 80 to Flosden Rd. intersection, they have to go to 37 then take the off ramp to Hwy 29/Sonoma Blvd. "

" At least they're telling us about it this time. I use to drive that road regularly in the evening and was surprised more than a couple times by the closure. One week it would be closed, the next week it would be open with no advance notice given. "

This was Vallejo's baby. They spent the money elsewhere and now it's stuck on CalTrans' shoulders.

Napa did their side first. "

" Trucks have no business being on jamieson canyon road. It was obviously not designed with them in mind. It's needed updating/widening for decades now. Ugh. Progress is slow. "

" People NOW are taking Jamieson Canyon Road to avoid American Canyon, not the other way around. "

" American Canyon Road is a county road and trucks are allowed on it. Its a great way to get on and off the freeway if you're going to Napa or the Napa airport area. And if you're afraid of Flosden because of the social problems there, American Canyon Road is the safest. "

" American Canyon has a 10,000 lb posted weight limit, less than most commercial trucks. For cars and light trucks, it is a good alternative to SR12. "

" How come I never here of closing Jamieson Canyon to trucks during commute hours? Other highways in the state do this. It seems that a lot of the slowdowns and accidents would be reduced with this simple step. 6-9 AM & 3-6 PM, no large trucks. They could use 37 or time their trips to avoid the prohibition.
Discuss! "

" reason-ator is right!

I'm one of those avoiding traffic light infestation in AmCyn. We need a new freeway from Walmart with an interchange at 37. This will HELP traffic problems, not hinder!

I'm sick and tired of AmCyn thinking they have something for you to look at while sitting at one of their many lights. Keep AmCyn what it is, "A Bedroom Community". Build a freeway through it! "

SouthNapa wrote on Sep 12, 2008 12:44 AM:

" The reason why Jameson Canyon Road isn't closed to trucks is because it is a vital artery into the valley from Solano County and points east. You can't just close off all the roads during peak times. American Canyon Road is restricted because it is far less safe for trucks than Highway 12 is.

If Jameson Canyon Road was closed to trucks, they all would clog onto 29 from 37 and create a traffic jam of epic proportions. Having two routes available to trucks is the right thing to do in order to keep businesses moving in the valley.

I still think closing Red Top Road at 12 would be a responsible thing to do. People literally take their lives in their hands just to try and cross there. "
