Napa boys earn soccer victory, tie
By Register Staff
The Napa High boys soccer team went 1-2-1 at the Del Campo Jamboree at Cherry Island in north Sacramento on Friday and Saturday. The annual tournament has games with 30-minute halves instead of 40, and there are no semifinal or championship games.
Indians coach Antonio Orozco said he used the tournament mostly to test many of his players at different positions, to help him come up with starters for league play. He said he’ll do the same at next Friday and Saturday’s Foothill Mustang Classic in Sacramento.
“When I see that they’re talking to each other, making good passes, moving ball around, looking for passes, all moving together and we have possession most of the time,” Orozco said.
The Indians (3-3-1 overall) opened with a 1-1 tie against perennial playoff team Granite Bay, despite not having top scoring threat Max Alvarez or standout midfielder Edgar Espino. Francisco Arreola scored the equalizer after the Grizzlies took a halftime lead.
Napa dropped its second match to Turlock, 2-0, allowing both goals in the second half. Orozco said the temperature was about 110 degrees for the game.
With Espino back on Saturday, the Indians bounced back with a deceptively close 3-2 win over Christian Brothers-Sacramento. After Arreola had two goals and Espino one for a 3-0 halftime lead, Napa coach Antonio Orozco said he substituted liberally.
The Indians finished with a 1-0 loss to Del Oro in another hot afternoon contest. The Eagles scored with 10 minutes left. Orozco was pleased with Alex Lopez, who was moved from his regular midfield spot to defender. He also commended midfielders Carlos Ochoa and Omar Delgadillo, and goalkeepers Frederico Aguayo and Marco Ruiz.
The Indians will host St. Helena at Raiders field on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
