Stay fire wise
CAL FIRE, Napa County Fire Department and the Napa Communities Firewise Foundation hold the next Firewise meeting Sunday, Sept. 21, 1- 4:30 p.m. at the Pope Valley Farm Center. The September meeting features presentations from Tucker Acres and Berryessa Estates Fire Safe Councils on the steps each community is taking to prepare for the eventuality of a major wildland fire. Also, Stephen Gort, NCFF Director, explain the process, and outline the resources that are available to communities, to create a Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

Details add up in designing green
In its third month of construction, the floor plan has emerged at David Horobin’s green house project in Napa. Rooms are starting to take shape and workers are installing the second floor of the innovative house into which Horobin, an Oxford-trained architect, is incorporating years of experience as a green-living advocate.
The humble carrot
It’s hard to quantify the qualities of a carrot that make it worth growing in your own garden — but my ideal carrot has a certain amount of sweetness coupled with just the right amount of crispness. Unfortunately, however, most of the carrots I have eaten over the years do not match this ideal.
