An old country church

St. Stephen’s’ Church on Oakville Grade looks like it could have been pulled out of a scene from “Little House on the Prairie” and plunked down on the winding road that leads to Sonoma County.

Built in 1914, the country church with a white steeple and white picket fence has the traditional glass windows that allow sunlight to stream in and warm the dark wooden pews.
An Episcopal parish until 1978, St. Stephen’s is part of the Anglican Province of Christ the King, with headquarters in San Francisco and its seminary in Berkeley.

The church did not have running water until 2003. Then, thanks to donations of several generous parishioners, a well was dug and a bathroom installed. The sacristy was added later along with the nursery, where Sunday School is held.
The church currently has about 40 parishioners, according to Rector Mike Mautner. Two services are held on Sunday and one on Thursday evening at the Veterans Home in Yountville.

More information about the history of the church is available at www.ststephensoakville.org.
