Divide and conquer in educating students

For a while now, Americans have been complaining about how the country’s students compare poorly to the students of most other countries, even Third World countries.

Playing in to claims of media bias

Talk about giving people a cynical reason to claim media bias.

Charlie Wilson's peace

Russia's invasion of Georgia has led to a more serious foreign policy discussion in the presidential campaign. As tensions rise in the Caucasus and violence once again erupts in Afghanistan, we should recall the lessons we learned from our response to earlier Russian adventurism. We must recognize now, as we learned years ago, that a strong military alone is not enough to ensure our long-term national security.

One last party before the Twin Cities

Patrick Mulligan, a student at Auraria College, took a temporary job delivering sandwiches for Silver Mine Subs because his school shut down for the entire week of the Democratic Convention. Stranded in our hotel parking lot in Cherry Creek, where cabs are as scarce as a Republican in Denver, he was kind enough to take us and three other guests downtown. I asked him what he thought about all the hoo-haw. “I hate it … too much traffic and weirdoes … I just want my quiet town back.”

Nothing healthy about teen drinking

Dear editor, I would like to add my thanks and support to the many other supporters for your Aug. 21 article “Paying for the Party.”

The scourge of underage drinking

Dear editor,  This letter is in response to your Aug. 21 cover story about the city of Napa’s teen party ordinance that holds accountable individuals who host parties where alcohol is provided or permitted to be consumed by underage youth (“Paying for the party”).

Write your job description for president

We are in the process of electing a new President of the United States. Those active in the political process have their opinions on John McCain and Barack Obama, but what about taking a bit of a different spin this time around.

Things to do in Denver when you're a Delegate

When I approached the Napa Valley Register about blogging from the Democratic National Convention, web guru Dan Ross suggested an introduction piece. So in the words of Ross Perot's VP running mate James Stockdale...who am I and why am I here?

On the way to acceptance night

On my way to pick up daily credentials for today, I ran into our Congressman, Mike Thompson. In fact, he was the one that saw me!  We chatted a few minutes about the convention as a whole and about last night's speeches.  Mike's a great guy and we're so lucky to have him representing us.
