Napa High grad Gibson to miss Eagles' season

5 p.m.The Philadelphia Eagles today placed Mike Gibson, an offensive lineman from Napa, on injured reserve. The Eagles made the announcement on their Web site as they got to the NFL-mandated 53-man roster limit for the regular season. Gibson, a sixth-round pick of the Eagles in the 2008 NFL Draft out of UC Berkeley, suffered an injury to his labrum in camp. He played in the first two preseason games and Thursday's exhibiton finale against the New York Jets.
Gibson, a guard, said the injury to his right shoulder happened three weeks ago. An MRI confirmed a tear of the labrum. He was the 184th player taken in the draft and the 18th player chosen in the sixth round.
He will return to Napa Monday and have surgery in Berkeley Thursday. He hopes to be at full strength for minicamps and organized team activites next year with the Eagles.
He'll be in Napa for two weeks following the surgery. It's a 4 to 6-month recovery.
Even though you're on IR, you still get a credited season. "And your allowed to to and sit in on all the meetings," said Gibson. "That's one thing nice about the Eagles — they want you to be here. And they want you to do rehab here."
Gibson played football at Napa High School, Solano Community College and UC Berkeley.
The Eagles released 12 players today.
