The CHP will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday between 8 p.m. to 2 a.m., Saturday, in Napa County.

Depending on traffic volume, officers hope to stop all drivers who go through the checkpoint. Motorists without valid a driver’s license will receive a citation and their vehicle will be impounded.

" Kudos to the Napa police on a job well done in last Friday's DUI checkpoint. Good luck this coming Friday, CHP, it's your turn to do us proud. Thanks to all! "

" Sounds more like a driver's license check for illegals, than a DUI check... Not that there's anything wrong with that... (big grin) "

" Let's get those for and against comments going -- or are we all exhausted from the last go around? :) "

" Yipee! Sounds like they listened to all of us saying that they should do one too! And a good weekend to do it as well. Thanks CHP and I hope you get quite a few. Will be very interesting to see the statistics of their checkpoint vs the PD's in town check point. Hope NVR reports what happens. "

" C'mon, CHP, shock me speachless and make me shut up, set up the checkpoint in the afternoon near some wineries. You wouldn't dare. "

" Awesome !! Its been far too long since CHP has done one of these. I look forward to reading big numbers from these guys. "

" Lets see...last week I said they would be in front of the Lincoln Apartments. This time...hmm... in front of the South Napa Plaza (you know, in front of Wilkins Apartments) or by Napa High. I hope I can go 2 for 2. "

" If CHP is doing the check point, I would guess they have to be on a "highway", so my guess is they will be on Imola between 29 and Soscol. "

" That's great they get all the drunks, bums, illegals,no insurance,no drivers license, druggies, and other dangerous and irresponsible drivers off the road in one neat swoop. They should pull this every few days untill the roads are cleaned up. "

abouttime wrote on Aug 28, 2008 12:37 PM:

" There is no probably cause involved in these stops and they are a clear violation of civil liberties. The same number of police patrolling the streets, stopping those who show probable cause of DUI, is a far better way to do this. "

" Maybe they'll do it near Berryessa. You can catch a lot of drunks there on a hot day during Labor Day weekend. "

" Gemini, I would love it if each car that passed through was completely legal and the driver sober, unfortunately, I work in an industry that gives me numbers that show that just isnt the case. More than a third of all vehicles are uninsured and many of those uninsured vehicles have unlicensed drivers behind the wheel of them, so as much as I like to be an optimist, I cant with this one. "

" abouttime

I agree with you here.

Taking people off the road for DUI is certainly a good thing. It's a highly irresponsible act.

But stopping everyone on the road without probable cause?

That's always made me uneasy. There's an implication of assumed guilt behind that reasoning. "

" It is stupid to drive after drniking. We have a breathalyzer like the ones the cops use. After on martini and on glass of wine, I blew 0.10 and my wife blew 0.21. I weight 250 and she is half that. Stop fooling yourself. If you have a drink or two you probably are over the line. Keep in mind they can cite you and give you a read even if you blow less that .08. "

chunk wrote on Aug 28, 2008 3:49 PM:

" Hey Dwayne. Why don't you go drive through the next checkpoint and see if they only ask you for your license and not whether or not you've been drinking. Heck how about drink one beer, be under the limit, and see what they do if they do happen to ask if you've been drinking. If it's not a DUI checkpoint they'll probably just let you on your way. You can write and tell everyone about it. (Big grin) "

" I just don't get why people are so bothered by drivers who are illegal or don't have a license. If they were legal, they would still get stopped. Have compassion for the Mexicans. They are not bothering you. "

cellsitegod wrote on Sep 5, 2008 5:54 AM:

" Are you looking at those "citylights" through "rose colored glasses"?
Illegals and unlicenced drivers ARE BREAKING THE LAW!
So what if the checkpoint is for DUI and they catch more illegals, unlicenced drivers and insurance violations.
I applaud the PD for being creative in catching these law breakers.
You people don't have a problem with undercover officers posing as someone else trying to buy drugs. In order to keep it out of the hands of our children.
Imagine how effective a uniformed officer would be trying to buy drugs.
If I try to comment here about how the Mexicans bother people. NVR would censor me. "

barefoot wrote on Sep 7, 2008 9:48 PM:

" I think somebody's breathalyzer need to be re-calibrated. If she blew a 0.21 as stated, 21 percent of her blood was alchohol. That is more than twice the legal limit, and close to half of what it would take to kill a human being. Sorry, I disagree with that statement. "

barefoot wrote on Sep 7, 2008 9:55 PM:

" The CHP needs money too. Gas money I'd guess. This time, lets check all of the cars to make sure they are safe to operate. If you have a brake light out, tow the vehicle. If your tire pressure is low, tow the vehicle. Rules are rules you know. I wouldn't want the CHP to let an unsafe vehicle remain on the road. Too much of a liabilty. "
