Napa County law enforcement agencies are giving the public plenty of warning they will be cracking down on drunk drivers this holiday weekend.

The Avoid the Six program means Napa, Calistoga, St. Helena, American Canyon police, Napa County Sheriff’s deputies and California Highway Patrol officers will be out in full force throughout Napa County during the Labor Day weekend.
Police vow to arrest everyone found driving “over the limit,” according to a press release from the sheriff’s department.

“We will be especially vigilant during high-risk night-time hours when impaired drivers are more likely to be on our roads,” sheriff’s Sgt. Doug Pace said in a press release.
Law enforcement agencies also are asking the public to help keep drunk drivers off the road by calling 911 if they spot someone they believe is driving while impaired. The CHP asks the caller be able to provide dispatch with the description and location of the vehicle.

" Excellent! And don't announce where you'll be! I think it's silly to let drunk criminals know where the checkpoints are ahead of time. I LOVE it when law enforcement catches drunks and illegals on the road! Thank you police, sheriffs and highway patrol! "

" Exasperated,
If you haven't noticed already, they will be at the criminal "hot spots" which are the Starbucks at Trancas & Soscol and Peets Coffee at the Bel Aire Shopping Center. "

" Exasperated, This article is about DRINKING AND DRIVING and not about illegal immigrants (So please stick to the subject). "

" Sgt. Doug Pace is so FUNNY! High-risk night-time hours when impaired drivers are more likely to be on our roads??? What about high-risk DAYTIME hours when all the wine tasters are leaving the wineries? "

" The main topic of the article is about DRINKING AND DRIVING; however, if no valid driver's license or proof of insurance, that would make you an illegal (driver) and it is good to remove all of the above from the roads at any time. "

" The reality is that most of the people that drive impaired do it on a regular basis, they just party a little more on holidays more people congregate to drink together or travel to locations like the lake or camping etc. then drink.
fortunately the majority that get arrested will be people who drive impaired on a regular basis. I cant count the construction sites Ive worked on where the crew all brought beer to work, had 1-2 at lunch and then had 3-4 more before getting on the road. If there was a way to round up all of the people who drive impaired I think many of us would be suprised at how many of our friends were in the group. Alcoholism and addiction affect us all and doesnt differentiate by way of class, sex, creed, race, etc. The article recently on underage drinking says a lot about us as a community and our attitude towards the problem. wake up and smell the stale beer. Look back through the dui reports for the last five years, or ten, and see how many re-offend or how many you know and love. Support the law enforcement programs that try to stem the tide, support the programs that attempt to help the alcoholic and addict and by all means support the alcoholic or addict that is trying to get well and find a new way to live. "

" Paisano - Exasperated did not state immigrants after illegal. I agree with NUHS67. I personally wouldn't want to be in an accident with somebody who doesn't have a license nor insurance. Pulling those people off the road is a good thing as well. "

" DUI's are good because for many people who drive drunk it is not their first rodeo. Some of my friends and I who all have DUI's had to learn the hard way. I can speak from experience that we didn't get caught our first time. We all can say that we're glad we got caught before we killed anybody or ourselves.
It doesn't matter if they announoce where the check point will be. People will forget or not even hear about it in the first place. "

" This is great news, indeed! Please, police officers, patrol the area between Calistoga and the Sonoma County line. Driving Petrified Forest Road on a Sunday (or in this case, a Monday) afternoon between 5 and 8 p.m. is taking your life in your hands. If you patrol during this time, it won't be a wasted effort. "

" They should set up a checkpoint on Partricks Rd to catch all the drunk teenagers trying to catch a glimpse of the elusive Reebob's.... Or maybe in front of the Grapeyard on Jefferson where all the cool people hang outside of their cars and gallivant.... That would be a sucess for sure.... "

Baraki wrote on Aug 28, 2008 9:01 PM:

" Wow, I haven't heard "reebob" in a while. The Register should do a story about the elusive reebobs -- to inform those of us non-native Napans about our resident spooks. "

" many of the posters re the July DUI report commented on the need for the County and CHP should get invloved...well you got it. Sounds like a county sweep...I mean mulit[ple check points....may take a while to get home.

project707: That's constructive!..oh gee...I forgot it is your attempt at humor.

My county-wide check point predictions:

DUIs 9
No License/etc. 52.

Anyone esle care to place a friendly wager/guess??? "

chunk wrote on Aug 28, 2008 11:08 PM:

" dreluvwine26 is right. I used to drive up to find the reebobs when I was in high school from 95-99. We'd take beers with us but mainly we were just getting stoned off weed. "

JMB wrote on Aug 28, 2008 11:50 PM:

" Interesting wording. They vow to only arrest people over the legal limit? So no .01 and 'wet and reckless'? Of course the CHP will bust anyone with any trace of alcohol. What if someone blew .07? Hmmm? Go on your way??? "
