The smell of smoke rousted a family of six from their beds around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

The oldest boy, who was planning to leave for college in Santa Barbara that morning, saw flames leaping from the outside vent in the attic, Calfire Battalion Chief Dave Shew said.
The family was able to get out of the single-story house on Viewridge Drive in Angwin without injury, Shew said. “It is a big house, about 2,000 square feet.”

The fire started to engulf a tree, but firefighters were able to knock down the flames and keep the fire from spreading into the wildland, Shew said.
“The family used the attic for storage, and fortunately all the stuff in the attic kept the fire from moving. There wasn’t a lot of wide open space,” Shew said.

The fire was contained to the attic. However, there was smoke and water damage to other parts of the house.
Shew estimated the fire damage around $100,000. He said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but is not considered suspicious.
