For 25 years, Napans have been buying paint from Bob McAdams at Devine Paint Center. Recently he opened a second store on Solano Avenue, near Ranch Market. 

McAdams said business at the new store improves daily.
“When I opened my first store in 1979, we crawled before we walked and I think that’s the same with the second store.”

What three people would you most like to have dinner with?
Adam Smith, Scottish economist and philosopher.

James Madison, fourth president and founding contributor to the U.S. Constitution.
My grandfather, Adolf McAdams. He passed when I was 3 years old. I remember him as a young boy, but I want a conversation and all it will bring. 

What job would you like to try/not try?

Try: Legislator

Not try: Coal miner

What’s the worst job you ever had?

Working the clean-up crew on a tomato line at Campbell Soup in South Sacramento.

How did you get into this business?

I was working an extra job at a hardware store in Richmond. The store’s owners told me I should quit my regular job and open a paint store because I was good with the little old ladies. 

What’s on your to-do list? 

Spend a summer solstice in a northern latitude of Sweden or Finland.

What’s something you would like to accomplish in your lifetime that you haven’t yet?

Visit Tralfamadore, (the alien planet from the novel Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut) where one can time trip.

What’s your favorite gift to give?

A copy of the short story “Chicxulub,” by T.C. Boyle.

Why? When you read the short story you will know why.

What’s something people might be surprised to know about you?

I used to be a city policemen for San Pablo, from 1975 to 1978. 

What is your favorite charity? 

The Institute for Justice, Arlington, Va.

The Foundation for Economic Education, Irvington-on-Hudson, N.Y.

What’s one thing Napa could do to help local business?

Fix/repair local roads without the citizens incurring more costs.
