Divide and conquer in educating students

For a while now, Americans have been complaining about how the country’s students compare poorly to the students of most other countries, even Third World countries.

Financial gurus don’t always get it right

Recently, there was a brief Q&A with Suze Orman in Money magazine. I’ve met some people who “swear” by Orman and refuse to make any financial decisions without first consulting her expressed points of view. Although there is much in her advice to the public that is sound, there are places where she goes overboard.

Joining hands in tough times

Last weekend, many of the valley’s major muckety-mucks strolled through the lawn at Trinchero Family Estates for the Hands Across the Valley fundraiser.

Letter to the payroll god

Dear editor, I am glad Sen. Patricia Wiggins was able to get a parity pay raise for the nurses at the Veterans Home. They certainly deserve parity pay, but there is another group that does the lion’s share of work with patients and they did not get anything.

Democratic cowardice

Dear editor, The other day I was listening to the “Forum” program on KQED. The guest was Rep. Nancy Pelosi. The issue of Congress’ failure to cut off funding, as they had the power to do, and end the war in Iraq was discussed. Mrs. Pelosi said Congress did not do this because it would leave our troops in Iraq without ammunition and other supplies.

A swinging affair

Dear editor, Many thanks to all of you at the Napa Golf Course for sponsoring the recent Junior Golf Tournament. Young and future golfers of all ages came out for a great afternoon in a family atmosphere for a little competition and lots of fun. We’re already looking forward to next year’s tournament. Thank you for all of your efforts.

Cast your vote with care

Dear editor, To all concerned people who plan to vote this November, I do hope you are watching how your representatives in Washington, D.C., are voting.

McCain vs. Omaba about to get really ugly

I am almost embarassed to be a Republican right now they are doing such a hatchet job on Obama. Almost everything they are criticizing him for is either an outright lie, or a subjective reading of him in the most intentionally negative manner possible. Usually there is some truth to negative ads, this time it is hard to see it.

Obama's VP, what do you think?

Barack Obama chose Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate ... what do you think of the choice?

McCain's VP, what do you think?

John McCain should be making his choice for vice president known very soon. Who do you think it should be?

Write your job description for president

We are in the process of electing a new President of the United States. Those active in the political process have their opinions on John McCain and Barack Obama, but what about taking a bit of a different spin this time around.

Prop 8: Are you yes or no on banning same-sex marriage?

Proposition 8, the "Limit on Marriage, Constitutional Amendment," on the November ballot, calls for an amendment to the state constitution, declaring that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

Things to do in Denver when you're a Delegate

When I approached the Napa Valley Register about blogging from the Democratic National Convention, web guru Dan Ross suggested an introduction piece. So in the words of Ross Perot's VP running mate James Stockdale...who am I and why am I here?

All this and convention is a day away?

Are there things to do in Denver if you’re a delegate? The answer is yes. The convention doesn’t  officially start until Monday, but my Sunday agenda filled up quickly. Here’s what we have on tap:

Events and speakers everywhere

Though we were tempted Sunday night with private parties at mansions outside Denver and a concert at Red Rocks with Dave Matthews and Sheryl Crow, we chose to attend the All-Delegate Celebration at the Colorado Convention Center ... and we were not disappointed one bit.

It's difficult to find time to eat

Here’s my 18-hour day: Wake up no later than 7 a.m., pick up my daily credentials and then it’s off to our California delegation breakfast.
