Ryan Galovic, a 6-foot, 220-pound senior rover, was recently elected as a defensive captain for the Weber State football team. The Wildcats start the 2008 season Thursday at home against Montana-Western in Ogden, Utah.
Galovic, a 2004 Napa High School graduate, played and started in all 11 games at the roverback spot last year. He had 47 total tackles, 14 of which were unassisted.
He made a big impression with 10 tackles in the season opener at Boise State and had a quarterback sack at home vs. Fort Lewis.
“His motor is always running and plays the game with passion and heart and is one of the leaders on the defensive side,” Weber State said on its athletic Web site.
Galovic is a former Napa High team captain who was All-Monticello Empire League and All-Napa County. Additionally, he was named as the Coach’s Defensive Player of the Year, Ironman of the Year and Special Teams Player of the Year for Napa.
During the 2006 season for Santa Rosa Junior College, he registered 49 tackles, two stops for losses, 2.5 quarterback sacks, one interception, four quarterback knockdowns and a forced fumble, as the Bear Cubs (10-1 overall) tied for the Northern California Conference title, won the inaugural State Center Bowl over Reedley College (21-20), and achieved a 10th straight winning season of football.
Weber State is located in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, on the western flank of the Rockies. The Wildcats play in the Big Sky Conference and are part of the NCAA Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision).
FCS schools have a 16-team playoff format to determine a national champion. The 16-team playoff has eight automatic qualifiers (league champions) from the following conferences: Big Sky, Colonial, Mid-Eastern Athletic, Missouri Valley Football, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern and Southland.
The other eight teams receive at-large berths. In the 29-year history of NCAA Division I FCS football, a team from the Big Sky has reached the championship game nine times, and has captured five titles.
Next week, Weber State makes its first ever trip to the Hawaiian islands. The Wildcats face the University of Hawaii on Sept. 6 at Aloha Stadium.
Harrison begins senior year
Craig Harrison starts his senior year for Central Missouri State University Thursday against Minnesota State-Mankato at Walton Stadium/Kennedy Field in Warrensburg, Mo.
Harrison is a 6-7, 315-pound offensive lineman from Napa who was named as an All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Second-Team selection as a tackle last year.
School officials said Harrison, who also played football at Solano Community College, “has great size and strength ... potentially one of the best offensive linemen in the country and should contend for All-American honors.”
As a junior, Harrison won the Union award against Truman and Southwest Baptist. He started the final eight games of 2007 after battling injuries in the preseason. Central Missouri is an NCAA Division II school.
The Mules will be looking to avenge last year’s 23-14 season opening loss to Minnesota State. The game is the first of seven home contests this season for Mules football, coming off a 7-4 season and third-place finish in the MIAA.
Harrison was a starter for two years at Solano and is a 2005 Napa High graduate.
He was a two-way starter his junior and senior year, playing offensive and defensive tackle on Napa teams that captured Monticello Empire League titles both years. He was recognized for his talent on the offensive side of the ball, earning All-MEL, All-Napa County, All-Metro by The Sacramento Bee, and receiving Napa’s offensive lineman award as a senior.
After playing right tackle for Solano his first year, Harrison moved to left tackle as a sophomore and was chosen as the Bay Valley Conference’s Offensive Lineman of the Year and First-Team All-State. A team captain, he was also selected to the JuCal Transfer All-State Preseason Football Team.
