A man running across Highway 29 in Oakville was struck and killed by an oncoming car Monday evening.

The man, whose identity is not known at this time, was standing in the center turn lane on the highway just north of Oakville Cross Road about 8:15 p.m. when he suddenly darted across the northbound lane, according to CHP.
He ran in front of a 2006 Volvo driven by 49-year-old Kathy Wood, said a CHP spokesperson. Wood, CHP stated, was driving about 55 mph and was unable to stop in time to avoid striking the man.

The man, estimated by CHP to be about 35 years of age, died at the scene. He had no identification on him, so CHP did not have a name to release.
Highway 29 was closed in both directions for more than two hours due to the crash.

" Sorry that this happened.... my thoughts are with the man's family, and also with Kathy Wood. It's hard when it's dark out, and you're driving home, and if you see a pedestrian, it's hard to see them. "

" I know it's hard to cross the highway where this happened and there are no crosswalks. I hope he is identified so the damily can be notified soon.Another sad story. "

" no ID on him? one wonders if he did this intentionally. "

" Napablogger: I too wonder if this was a suicide. Whether it was or not, I really feel for the poor lady who hit him. My sister-in-law had a similar incident where someone jumped in front of her car. She was able to miss him and he tried it a second time! When she avoided him the second time (she's had race-car training!) he jumped off a near-by bridge. Fortunately, the drop from the bridge was only about 3 feet. The cops were able to get him and arrest him. "

" How did he try it again? Did she turn around and start driving toward him again? I'm confused.

If the man is local, I don't think it will take much time to identify him. If he was from out of town -- well, I can imagine it can be very difficult to identify tourists who are traveling alone... "

" Baraki: It happened in a 25 or 30 MPH zone., so she was going pretty slow to start with. I don't know what the deal was with the guy, if it was a game of "chicken" or what.... Instead of hitting him, she stopped. When she tried to leave, he jumped in front of her again, but she swerved. Once she finally got around him, he jumped off the bridge. It really scared her. "

" I was riding the motorcycle that passed the scene immediately after the collision. Someone had the forethought to block the lane so others would not strike the man in the lane. Another person was frantically signaling us to slow down. I saw Ms. Wood running back toward the person she had unfortunately struck. It was so dark, and unavoidable by this person placing himself in the path of vehicles. I am now home and if it had been me that met his path I would still be in Napa. "

" Mark -- freaky. Sorry to hear about that. I had a guy jump off half-dome while I was visiting Yosemite. That made the downhill trip a little more difficult -- psychologically. One moment he's standing there looking like he's appreciating the view, next moment he's leaping off the diving board. To quote a Yosemite Rescue climber, "That'll leave a mark... on the rock." Guess you gotta keep a sense of humor about things if that's your job. "

" Kathy Wood - I don't know you but you've been on my mind since I read this heartbreaking story. I'm sure this is a difficult time for you, but you can't blame yourself for this terrible tragedy. "

" Kathy - My thoughts and prayers are with you (as well as the man's family). You are an incredible person, and I was devastated to hear that this happened to you. Stay strong! "
