The daily Democratic Convention notes from Napa's Henry Michalski, one of two Napans sending daily blogs from the convention in to NapaValleyRegister.com
By HENRY MICHALSKI
Monday, Aug. 25, 2 p.m.Mary Fierro from Fresno was elected as a Hillary delegate to the national convention, and is not budging.
Sporting a green "Give 'em Hell Hillary" button in the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel where the California delegation is bedding down, Fierro was adamant in holding out for her hero. When pressed, “At what point will you come over and support the presumptive nominee of your party,” she said emphatically, “Never!”
Taken aback by her strong response, I asked, “Have you received any pressure, threats, from your fellow delegates to come on over?” The fiery Fierro, a 60-looking kindergarten teacher said, “I was elected to do a job and that’s what I intend to do. Hillary won California, and I don’t appreciate the arrogance of the Obama camp. Just who do they think they are treating the Clintons so shabbily. They bullied their way with an attitude to get where they are now, and did not even have the decency to vet Hillary as a vice presidential running mate. Obama is simply not ready to be our president.”
“That’s all in the past now,” I reacted, “Your choice is simply Barack Obama or John McCain, certainly you’ll not vote for the Republican. Is there anything camp Obama can do to win you over?”
“No, I will vote for McCain or not vote at all. I am here to honor the vote of the people who sent me here.”
Not so SF Mayor Gavin Newsom, who was checking into the Sheraton, clutching his brand new wife, Jennifer, whose diamond ring is the size of a Hershey kiss and as glittery as Gavin’s teeth.
The couple beamed as if their Montana “Out of Africa”-themed wedding was yesterday. I asked if Willie Brown approved of his wedding suit, to which he joked, “I’m very upset with Willie, how dare he show me up in his $10,000 Brioni.”
Thinking of Mary Fierro, I asked the Mayor, whom Time Magazine featured as one of five young up-and-coming “Hotshots to Watch”, “Hillary won California; is the delegation holding together?”
“We must win in November and I will do whatever it takes to help elect Obama. It sounds like a cliché Henry, but this election IS the most important in a generation, one that will define our nation for years to come. We have to pull together to win.”
I asked him what percentage of California’s huge delegation he thought was still holding out for Hillary. He estimated the number at about 10 percent, but lamented, “They are an influential bunch who have not budged they are still waiting to hear what Bill and Hillary have to say in the next few days, but may never come over. They are hard-core,” he said emphatically, “but eventually I think they will come over.”
The Mayor was visibly relieved, thrilled to leave questions of politics behind; animated in discussing one of his favorite subjects: Napa! “We just opened a new restaurant, Cade, near Angwin. Jennifer and I love the Napa Valley and get there as often as we can. You live in Paradise, but are, after all, part of the Bay Area, ABAG, and I especially love working with Supervisor Bill Dodd, a hard working civic-minded leader who takes transportation and land management issues quite seriously.” The three of us had our pictures snapped, the happy couple gleaming with hope.
Other tidbits:
-- Jennifer Laszlo Mizrahi, who heads a powerful educational organization, said at a private house party in Englewood, “I have been working with the Congress all of my adult life, and I know politics. You know, poly means many, and tics are blood suckers.” I reached for a slab of smoked salmon.
-- Later that afternoon at the Auraria Campus of the University of Colorado, I ran into Charlie Wilson from Texas, the very one portrayed by Tom Hanks in the film, Charlie Wilson’s War. I asked him if the film was an accurate portrayal of his deeds, to which the tall white-haired Texan, looking every bit the hand-grasping politician, loudly responded so as to be heard over the ubiquitous dim of the black helicopters working the skies of Denver, “Very accurate, right on the money my friend, a great film.” An attractive young lady wearing three homemade Obama buttons overheard the remark, and took me aside to explain that, “the man is full of s..., and that he made a ton of money off the Afghans. He is so full of himself; the only thing real about the film was the booze and hot-tubs.”
I reached for another slice of smoked salmon and a cold beer.

I always laugh when I hear a Hillary supporter say they will vote for McCain now. It's like a big neon sign above their head screaming "uninformed voter". There so mad about her losing that they will vote against everything Hillary believes in. lol "

This 'Donna Quixote' is making use of her 15 minutes to tilt windmills. Hillary lost when she started out ahead. Hillary fought a hard campaign but was not chosen by the grassroots Democrats who voted and caucused.
In a democracy however, it's arrogance to refuse to bow to the will of the electorate.
However, I watched the John McCain event and saw McCain join in the 'fun' when some harridan said, "Tell us how we can beat the b(-word for female dog that rhymes with 'itch')"
I can't understand how this woman thinks that saying she will vote for the man who laughed along with the crowd while Hillary Clinton was being slimed by Republicans thinks she's helping out the woman who says she will vote for Obama.
Nor can I understand how many women could vote for John McCain a who offered up his own wife to be 'Miss Buffalo Chip' in Sturgis just a few weeks ago.
But... in 300 million people, you are going to have more than a few 'interesting personalities', rational or not.

So, please remember this November that the majority of Americans disagree with you, always have, always will.
And don't forget, before Carter in '76, all the Democrats elected in the past were a lot more like McCain than Obama by a long shot.
See, Ruff, it's about an ideology that has failed the world over, and to the extent it's been tried in America, utter failure for decades. It's called socialism, a very bad word indeed. Sorry, but you will not see the socialist utopia realized in this country. I'd say move to Canada or France, but the fact is that those and other countries are realizing the error of their socialist ways and are changing fast. "

I cant wait to see the 'arrogance' from the left we will see on these boards after the election. "

I was reading about how the PUMAs were saying they had raised $10 million to retire Hillary's debt and it turned out to be only 4% of that.
Barack Obama took in $51 million last month in donations of under $100 with no lobbyists allowed. McCain raised about half that WITH lobbyists being a major part of the campaign and providing much of the cash.
People making an honest appraisal of the candidates will have to concede that having over 2 million small donors and no money from lobbyists is a new indicator of the strength of a candidates chances.
People who give money to a candidate are highly likely to vote and lots of individual voters giving to a candidate potentially translates to lot of votes in November.

You are very sweet...
"...People who give money to a candidate are highly likely to vote and lots of individual voters giving to a candidate potentially translates to lot of votes in November..."
It looks then that BO will get 2 million votes from "honest" people...
Did someone mention Utopia? :) "

We have to remove tentacles of Bushite criminals and prosecute the evildoers.
So far, the Dems have shown no stomach for actually putting criminals behind bars unless those criminals are not politically connected to big corporate donors.
I am an Independent and while I have chosen Barack Obama over the evildoers, I see no sign that the Dems have the spine to put down the rabid animals of the last eight years without LOTs of pressure from regular Americans.
Rooting out the Bushites is what the Founders were charging Americans with when they said to support the US Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic.
Once the corrupt branches of the Republican party are lopped off, new growth can occur again. Hopefully without people who support torture just because 'their guy' does.

Duff, I don't recall seeing anything in the founders writings suggesting America should evolve toward socialism. There is a huge cliff at the end of Nobamas path... Keep fallowing. "

In a new ad, Obama says, "I don’t take money from oil companies."
Technically, that's true, since a law that has been on the books for more than a century prohibits corporations from giving money directly to any federal candidate. But that doesn’t distinguish Obama from his rivals in the race.
We find the statement misleading:
Obama has accepted more than $213,000 from individuals who work for companies in the oil and gas industry and their spouses.
Two of Obama's bundlers are top executives at oil companies and are listed on his Web site as raising between $50,000 and $100,000 for the presidential hopeful.
Hate to burst B.O. "Messiah" bubble... "
