For a while now, Americans have been complaining about how the country’s students compare poorly to the students of most other countries, even Third World countries.
Denver delivers
Mary Fierro from Fresno was elected as a Hillary delegate to the national convention, and is not budging.
Solar, wind and the end of U.S. independence
Ever wonder about the TV commercial “Flex Your Power,” which has a light switch as its logo, promoting wind and solar? It states global warming is a fact. Another commercial, “We can solve it,” also promotes wind and solar.

The Democratic presidential ticket
Picking up a dusty copy of Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s autobiography the other day, we were struck by two points that underscore his value to Barack Obama as his running mate.
Coming together to stop underage drinking
Dear editor, thank you for your front-page article that focused on underage drinking parties (“Paying for the party,” Aug. 21).
A magic garden, free to all
Dear editor, since my 15-month-old son learned to walk this summer, we have visited the Copia Kids Garden almost every week to see the chickens, visit the bunny rabbit, point at the river, touch trickling water from the drips, spin wheels, dig in the dirt, see giant squash and sunflowers and explore the “secret path” of plenty. The garden has become one of my son’s special places, where he runs from one exciting thing to the next pointing and squealing with delight.
The rise of the Third World
Fareed Zakaria, one of the most insightful and interesting writers on issues of general political importance to Americans, has recently written a follow up book to his last one, "The Future of Freedom.” The new book is called, "The Post American World.” Both books are outstanding and I would recommend them to anyone.
McCain vs. Omaba about to get really ugly
I am almost embarassed to be a Republican right now they are doing such a hatchet job on Obama. Obama's VP, what do you think?
Barack Obama chose Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate ... what do you think of the choice?
McCain's VP, what do you think?
John McCain should be making his choice for vice president known very soon. Who do you think it should be?
Write your job description for president
We are in the process of electing a new President of the United States. Those active in the political process have their opinions on John McCain and Barack Obama, but what about taking a bit of a different spin this time around.
Prop 8: Are you yes or no on banning same-sex marriage?
Proposition 8, the "Limit on Marriage, Constitutional Amendment," on the November ballot, calls for an amendment to the state constitution, declaring that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.
Things to do in Denver when you're a Delegate
When I approached the Napa Valley Register about blogging from the Democratic National Convention, web guru Dan Ross suggested an introduction piece. So in the words of Ross Perot's VP running mate James Stockdale...who am I and why am I here?
All this and convention is a day away?
Are there things to do in Denver if you’re a delegate? The answer is yes. The convention doesn’t officially start until Monday, but my Sunday agenda filled up quickly. Here’s what we have on tap:
Events and speakers everywhere
Though we were tempted Sunday night with private parties at mansions outside Denver and a concert at Red Rocks with Dave Matthews and Sheryl Crow, we chose to attend the All-Delegate Celebration at the Colorado Convention Center ... and we were not disappointed one bit.
