When Whole Foods opened in Napa it include a line of signature local sandwiches, using names from Napa Valley towns — but not Calistoga. To correct this grievous oversight, Yvonne Henry and Antoinette Maillard have created he Great Calistoga Sandwich Caper. All Seasons Bistro, Brannan’s Grill, Boskos Trattoria, Calistoga Inn, Calmart Deli, Hydro Bar & Grill, Jole Restaurant and Cafe Sarafornia have all signed on to the challenge of creating the perfect “Calistoga sandwich,” and David Cosper, manager of Whole Foods, has promised to add the winning sandwich to the store menu.

Participants had to be commercial food purveyors located in Calistoga. Each was provided with descriptions of current Whole Foods sandwiches to avoid duplication. To meet Whole Foods’ criteria, the entries “can have no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, and  must be made without hydrogenated oil.”
The official sandwich judging takes place Saturday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m., at the Calistoga Community Center on Washington Street, Calistoga. The judges, Deiter Deiss, Denise Drawsky, Mayor Jack Gingles, Chick Harrity, Margaux Singleton, Karen Slusser and Eden Umble, are all from Calistoga.

We’ll keep you posted on the results and when you’ll be able to buy the Calistoga sandwich at Whole Foods.

" How about the Napa Ripoff Whole wheat whole paycheck sandwich". Take three sliced of bread, and top with your entire paycheck, most of your kids college fund and smear with arrogance and pretense. Oh and a little mayo. Please just make a sandwich for $3. it's only a sandwich. "

" I already am envisioning a name for the new sandwich. The Napa Elite Poor Boy. It'll be about $12, a common hourly wage around here for us plebes. Toss in a salad and drink from Whole Paycheck, and we've just spent 2 hours of our paycheck (or 1/4 of a shift) on just LUNCH. Um, no thanks. "
