Divide and conquer in educating students

For a while now, Americans have been complaining about how the country’s students compare poorly to the students of most other countries, even Third World countries.

Changing China

Think downtown Napa is changing fast?

Who is really winning the Olympics?

The United States (or more precisely, the U.S. news media) have unilaterally chosen to rank countries’ overall performance according to which nation has won the most total medals. Not surprising, under this standard, the U.S. might come out on top.

Napa's open-door Democrats

Dear editor, I wanted to thank Mike Jacobs for pointing out that the Democrats staffing the booth at the Napa Town & Country Fair felt good about the job that we did with more than 40 volunteers (“Extend Democrats’ era of good feeling,” Aug. 19).

A busy week in Yountville

Dear editor, It was an interesting week for me. On the fourth of August I officially became a candidate for Yountville Town Council. On the sixth I was informed by telephone that the Yountville Town Council had filed a lawsuit against me and that I was to appear in Napa County Superior Court on the eighth of August at 11:30 a.m.

Almost everything they are criticizing him for is either an outright lie, or a subjective reading of him in the most intentionally negative manner possible. Usually there is some truth to negative ads, this time it is hard to see it.

Obama's VP, what do you think?

Barack Obama chose Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate ... what do you think of the choice?

McCain's VP, what do you think?

John McCain should be making his choice for vice president known very soon. Who do you think it should be?

Prop 8: Are you yes or no on banning same-sex marriage?

Proposition 8, the "Limit on Marriage, Constitutional Amendment," on the November ballot, calls for an amendment to the state constitution, declaring that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

Things to do in Denver when you're a Delegate

When I approached the Napa Valley Register about blogging from the Democratic National Convention, web guru Dan Ross suggested an introduction piece. So in the words of Ross Perot's VP running mate James Stockdale...who am I and why am I here?
