Good thing a St. Helena man didn’t stay for another cup of coffee.

The man returned to his home on Spring Mountain Road around 3:30 p.m., Thursday, after having coffee with his wife.
When he arrived at his home, he saw his gate and the door of his barn were open, sheriff’s Capt. John Robertson said.

The owner told deputies he saw a man, later identified at Joseph Edward Carroll, coming out of the barn.
“The suspect told the man his pickup had overheated and he was looking for water,” Robertson said. “The suspect got into his pickup and drove off.”

The man followed Carroll, but lost sight of him — however not before getting his license plate number. The man called police dispatch and reported the incident, giving dispatchers the license plate number.
Deputies saw Carroll about 15 minutes later driving his pickup on Highway 29. They stopped him. After the man identified Carroll as the person he discovered in his barn, Carroll was taken into custody.

The man told deputies when he returned home after losing track of Carroll, that he checked his barn and found his paint sprayer and power washer had been moved from where he normally keeps them, Robertson said.

Carroll, 33, of Napa was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary.
