Supervisor candidate Gary Simpson has the backing of Harold Moskowite, the man whose job he hopes to take.

On Thursday Moskowite, the incumbent member of the Napa County Board of Supervisors representing the district including south Napa, Coombsville and American Canyon, said he thinks the former Napa County sheriff should be his successor.
“Gary Simpson is the clear choice for county supervisor because his extensive experience and knowledge of county government give him a solid grasp of the key issues facing this district and this county,” Moskowite said in a prepared statement.

Simpson is in a runoff for Moskowite’s seat against former American Canyon Fire Chief Keith Caldwell.
Caldwell was the top vote-getter in the June primary, getting 34 percent to Simpson’s 30 percent.

Napa County Planning Commissioner Rich Jager, who last month threw his support to Simpson, and American Canyon City Councilmember Cindy Coffey finished third and fourth, respectively.
Since no candidate earned a majority of the vote, the top two are in a runoff.

Similarly, incumbent Supervisor Mark Luce and top challenger Harry Martin are in a Nov. 4 runoff for the District 2 seat.

Moskowite is retiring from the board of supervisors.

In Tuesday’s announcement, Moskowite said, “I have always been impressed by Gary’s work in this community as county sheriff. He already has the necessary skills to be an effective county supervisor, including managing a multi-million dollar budget, managing a large staff, and handling tough negotiations between varying organizations.”

Caldwell said Tuesday he was disappointed that he didn’t have a chance to talk to Moskowite about his endorsement, but said he was “not that surprised” by Moskowite’s choice.

“I would certainly have liked the chance to talk to Harold before his decision, just as I would have liked to talk to Rich (Jager)” before he endorsed Simpson.

But Caldwell noted that he recently picked up the endorsement of Napa County Planning Commissioner Jim King and said that, in any case, “We don’t think it is all about endorsements.”

Caldwell said he’s gearing up for more door-to-door campaigning. “We’re getting ready to wear out our shoes again,” he said.

Caldwell worked for the American Canyon Fire District for more than 26 years and was chief for 17, retiring last year. He easily carried American Canyon, which is home to about half of District 5’s registered voters, in the June primary.

Simpson spent 37 years in local law enforcement, first with the Napa Police Department and then with the Napa County Sheriff’s Office. He was the elected Napa County Sheriff for 20 years, retiring in 2006. In June he was the top vote-getter in parts of the district including Napa and Coombsville.

In a prepared statement, Simpson said, “Harold understands the ins and outs of this job and the fact that he sees me as having the experience necessary to be an effective supervisor means a great deal.”

" When you really get down to the bottom line of this runoff for Dist. 5 Supervisor, those who have thrown their support and backing Gary Simpson, have quite the insight as to what it truly takes to sit in that seat and to answer to those in your district that are depending on you. Moskowite pretty much sums it up with his statement about Simpson's experience and... “I have always been impressed by Gary’s work in this community as county sheriff. He already has the necessary skills to be an effective county supervisor, including managing a multi-million dollar budget, managing a large staff, and handling tough negotiations between varying organizations.”
The rest of Gary's qualifications consist of his honesty and integrity, as well as his business education and experience, knowledge of his District, and the County, and how he put it all together to gain the trust of those he was responsible for as Sheriff, being the people. Being elected Sheriff for 20 years running gives credence to the confidence the people of Napa County has in him. Personally, I'd go with the tried and proven. "

" Before anyone votes for Simpson you should check out his background and what he has done while a policeman. I've herd some pretty scarry things. Just because he was sheriff for 20 years just means he can either buy votes or scare people away. Talk to some of the people who worked for him, he wasn't very nice either. Check out the background before you vote.
I don't think we really want a good ol boy in there anyway. I voted for Mr. Moskowite both times and am very disappointed thius last go around. "

" Harold woke up long enough to endorse Simpson..? I wonder if Mr. Moskowite is bequeathing his nap time to Mr. Simpson. "

" Hey Sicko, Moskowite may be a little past his prime and on his way out, but leave the personal insults out and keep it relevant to the conversation. I may be a little partial since he is my grandfather, even though I at some times have my own questionable thoughts...but personal jabs are not the mature way to go about it. Say what you want about how he did at his job as supervisor, but don't be lame. "

" kbf: So the choice is between Simpson, who you claim "wasn't very nice" when he was a policeman several decades ago, or Caldwell, who according to AmCan's attorney's legal opinion authorized extra pay to 6 firefighters for bogus $499 diplomas -- an illegal gift of public funds that has to date cost taxpayers $35,000 plus the cost of a lengthy investigation to uncover the fraud. Hmm, which to choose. "

" kbf, before voting for Caldwell check out his background. This whole thing of signing off on phony diplomas to grease the firefighters in his dept tells you a lot. He had to know that was a fraud, and then he lies about it in his letter to the editor. He has taken no responsibility for what a whopper of an ethical breakdown that was, then hides behind some state person and said he didn't make a mistake. Totally unbelievable.

I would respect him if he just admitted he really wasn't paying attention, but no, he says giving people raises for college degrees based on getting a degree for writing one essay and paying for a piece of paper was not a problem.

We don't need someone like that in the top political job in the county. I am sure in many ways he is a fine person, but we have enough trouble with politicians being unethical and not telling the truth as it is.

You, know, if you have specific criticisms of Simpson you ought to say them come to think of it. It is not fair to him to put out all this innuendo that is damaging without enough specifics that he can respond to it. "

" kbf - yes, let's ask the people who worked for Gary Simpson...I am one of those persons and I am happy to endorse a man of Gary Simpson's honesty and integrity. Ask the people who worked for him...that's what Simpson did prior to deciding to retire. He went to the Deputy Sheriff's Association and asked them to decide. They voted 100% for him to stay another term but Gary felt otherwise and decided to move on in his life. Simpson cares about the citizens of Napa County and as such we were always told to remember who we work for…in fact those were his last words to the employees…
He honorably held the office of Napa County Sheriff for 20 years…he served the citizens of Napa County…you and me. Simpson brought us out of the dark ages and helped us move forward with current technology. He kept the department honest and held his deputies accountable for their actions.
By the way kbf - what did Simpson arrest you for? Yes, it’s obvious you’re mad at him and it goes back quite a few years. Get over it. We need Gary Simpson to help lead the county in the right direction. The citizens of Napa County would do well to put Simpson back in office where he can continue to serve them. It's what he does best...let's let him do it! "

" NAPGRL55 that is what politics is all about. And face it, Mr. Moskowite was filmed, televised, sleeping through meetings. His heart just wasn't in it. He said himself that it wasn't like the good ol days (to paraphrase) and not what he expected. "
