The deer season in Napa County (Zone A) began on Aug. 9 and will end on Sept. 21. Dove season begins on Sept. 1, quail can be hunted starting Sept. 27, and Nov. 8 will be the first day of the fall wild turkey season.

All of these can be hunted on certain public lands in Napa County.
Below are just a few of these public lands.

The Cedar Roughs
Located just west of Lake Berryessa, the Cedar Roughs area features thousands of acres of brush-covered canyons, serpentine grasslands, oak woodlands and riparian habitats.

The Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation ownerships are stewards for the 6,350-acre Cedar Roughs Wilderness Study Area.
The California Department of Fish & Game also owns two separate parcels totaling 413 acres, located at the north-west end of Lake Berryessa, off Pope Canyon Road. The eastern parcel lies 2.2 miles west of the Pope Creek bridge.

The western parcel lies 4.2 miles west of the bridge and provides access to some of the BLM land. Access to both areas requires crossing Pope Creek by foot, which is only possible during the dry season.

The Cedar Roughs Wildlife Area is designated as a “non-mechanized access only.” This is a Type C area, meaning no permits, passes or reservations are required.

It is unlawful to shoot within 150 yards of a developed site or dwelling including campgrounds, and from or across any road or trail.

Due primarily to the lack of good access, there are very few visitors to this area. One trail on the south side of Pope Creek ascends a ridge to the south on Department of Fish & Game property.

This is an old jeep trail dating back to the time when the property was in private ownership. The trail ends before crossing the wilderness boundary. Because of the lack of trails leading into the Cedar Roughs itself and the presence of very thick vegetation in the cypress stand, hiking through this part of the wilderness area is difficult.

However, with wilderness designation and plans to improve access with a new trail, visitor use will gradually begin to increase as recreationists begin to discover this wilderness area.

There are two distinct streams within Cedar Roughs Wilderness, Hardin Creek to the west and Trout Creek to the east. Bordering a portion of the north boundary is Pope Canyon, where Trout Creek converges with Pope Creek.

Rector Reservoir Wildlife Area

Access to the Rector Reservoir Wildlife Area is on Silverado Trail north of Yountville Cross Road, just south of the Napa County maintenance yard.

This parcel includes 340 acres of oak woodland and mixed chaparral on hillside to steep ridgetop south of reservoir. Deer, turkey and quail may be hunted here.

The only parking is along the roadway, and very limited. Make sure your vehicle is completely off the pavement. The watershed area surrounding the reservoir is owned by Dept. of Veterans Affairs and is not open to the public.

Knoxville Wildlife Area

Located in the far northeastern corner of Napa County along Berryessa-Knoxville Road, the Knoxville Wildlife Area’s terrain is rugged with elevations ranging from 1,000 feet to 2,200 feet.

The 8,104-acre parcel can be accessed along the Berryessa-Knoxville Road north of the lake. Deer, wild turkey, quail, rabbit, gray squirrel, dove, pigeon and bear can be found here.

Possession in the field and use of firearms and archery equipment is permitted only for the purpose of hunting on Knoxville Wildlife Area.

Target shooting is not allowed. This is also a Type C area — no permits, passes, or reservations are required. It is unlawful to collect or remove bottles or artifacts, or dig or otherwise disturb the soil to locate bottles or artifacts from any Wildlife Area.

Primitive camping is permitted one-quarter of a mile beyond parking areas and from the Berryessa Knoxville Road. No facilities or drinking water are available. No vehicle camping or trailer camping is allowed at this time.

No campfires are permitted within the Knoxville Wildlife Area between April 30 and Oct. 30.

Off-highway vehicle use is not permitted within the Knoxville Wildlife Area.
