Divide and conquer in educating students

For a while now, Americans have been complaining about how the country’s students compare poorly to the students of most other countries, even Third World countries.

Changing China

Think downtown Napa is changing fast?

Wal-Mart undermining key workers' rights bill

Recently the Washington Post reported that America’s largest private employer convened mandatory, closed-door meetings with thousands of its store managers and department heads over the past weeks to “warn” them about the negative consequences if Sen. Barack Obama wins the presidential election. The corporation pointed to Obama’s support of legislation called the Employee Free Choice Act, which would put the choice on how to form a union back in employees’ hands.

What you post is there for everyone to see, and it stays there for everyone to see.

Budget, water dominate ballot concerns

This is shaping up as a make-or-break week not only on the long-stalled California budget but also on other major issues, such as water bonds, that are tied to the Nov. 4 ballot.

Lots of respect for Vietor, FFA

Dear editor, My daughter has been involved with Future Farmers of America through the great program at Vintage High School for the past two years. Heidi Vietor does a great job inspiring the students and keeping the level of enthusiasm high. I salute the bidders at this year’s 4-H/FFA livestock auction. You are the heart and soul of our lovely valley and its lifestyle. You have my profound respect.

Of morality and microphones

Dear editor, This is amazing! Has anyone else noticed this?

Giving their best at the fair

Dear editor,As a sponsor of the Napa Community Bank Building Art Competition (for both adults and children) and the Children’s Recycled Art Competition, I would like to recognize and thank the staff and volunteers of the Napa Valley Expo for their hard work and dedication to making the Napa Town and Country Fair a success. In working with us they had to coordinate the delivery of certificates for the winners and gather the entries for us to pick up after the fair was over.

Candidate choices may reverse party fortunes

Dear editor, In a presidential election year that Democrats could not lose, what do we have? The Democratic National Committee has pushed forward a lightweight, unready-to-lead junior senator — one with no significant accomplishments who has questionable judgment in regard to mentors and professional associates in Chicago. The sure-to-lose Republicans selected an experienced senator, military pilot, a country hero and POW from a painful time in our past.

Serving it up for seniors

Dear editor, First and foremost, we would like to thank the Register for the wonderful story on Meals on Wheels and our remarkable drivers (“Couple, 90 and 88, make rounds with Meals on Wheels,” Aug. 3).

The rise of the Third World

Fareed Zakaria, one of the most insightful and interesting writers on issues of general political importance to Americans, has recently written a follow up book to his last one, "The Future of Freedom.” The new book is called, "The Post American World.” Both books are outstanding and I would recommend them to anyone.

McCain vs. Omaba about to get really ugly

I am almost embarassed to be a Republican right now they are doing such a hatchet job on Obama. Almost everything they are criticizing him for is either an outright lie, or a subjective reading of him in the most intentionally negative manner possible. Usually there is some truth to negative ads, this time it is hard to see it.

Obama's VP, what do you think?

Barack Obama should be making his choice for vice president known any moment now. Did you sign up to receive the text message to learn who it is?

McCain's VP, what do you think?

John McCain should be making his choice for vice president known very soon. Who do you think it should be?

Prop 8: Are you yes or no on banning same-sex marriage?

Proposition 8, the "Limit on Marriage, Constitutional Amendment," on the November ballot, calls for an amendment to the state constitution, declaring that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

Things to do in Denver when you're a Delegate

When I approached the Napa Valley Register about blogging from the Democratic National Convention, web guru Dan Ross suggested an introduction piece. So in the words of Ross Perot's VP running mate James Stockdale...who am I and why am I here?
