The White Barn's Film Festival — apes, beauties and sleepers
The White Barn Film Fest returns this weekend — classic movies under the stars at St. Helena’s equally classic arts venue.
David Garden Jr. has put together an intriguing lineup that begins Friday, Aug. 22 at 8 p.m. with the screening of “Seven Beauties” (1976), “a horrifying and hilarious tragi-comedy” that became an art-house hit and resulted in the first Oscar nomination for directing to go to a woman, Lina Wertmuller.
Saturday, Aug. 23, at 8 p.m., is a tribute to Charlton Heston (1923-2008). “Many people remember Heston as the president of the NRA,” said Garden. “He also marched with Martin Luthur King and opposed the Vietnam war. We’ll kick off the evening with a short video tribute to the actor’s six-decade career. Then sit back and enjoy, ‘Planet of the Apes’ (1968), starring Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter.”
The festival wraps up with Woody Allen’s futuristic comedy, “Sleeper” (1973), Sunday, Aug. 24, at 8 p.m. This is the one where Miles Monroe (Allen) wakes up from an operation 200 years later to find society has gone beserk. Co-starring Diane Keaton, “Sleeper” is filled with sight gags galore and great one-liners.
Chairs are provided, or bring your own, low-back chair. Warm clothes are advised.
The gates open at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, which is picnic day. Tickets are sold at the door only. Donation is $10, and all proceeds go to the St. Helena Food Pantry and future White Barn productions
