Volunteers needed for wheelchair tennis event today through Sunday

Local youth are being asked to volunteer for the second annual USTA Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, held at Napa Valley College Aug. 15-17.
Ball boys and girls will be needed starting today at 10 a.m. for an “up and down” tournament.

Tournament play resumes Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. and ending between 5 and 6 p.m. each day.
All volunteers will get a free T-shirt and cap, lunch, and a ticket to the Saturday evening banquet. The banquet starts at 7 p.m. at the Pelusi building just off the Napa Valley College campus.

Parents of volunteers are invited to the banquet at no charge.
All volunteers will receive a certificate by mail acknowledging their community service hours. Volunteers must sign in and sign out each day.

Children will be supervised by an adult.

Vet Golf Tournament deadline today

The Day for the Vet Golf Tournament is Aug. 22 at Napa Golf Course in Kennedy Park. The event has a 1 p.m. shotgun start and is followed by a catered dinner, live music and entertainment, and a raffle with prizes. The cost is $100 per player or $35 for dinner only.

The Day for the Vet is sponsored by Vietnam Veterans of California, a Santa Rosa-based nonprofit organization with over 30 years of experience helping veterans in all areas of needs. Proceeds from the tournament go toward programs helping veterans from different eras and conflicts. Proceeds from the event will help recently-separated veterans with their transition back into communities, areas of assistance, including job training, employment, housing and other supportive services.

Last year, VVC provided services to over 1600 veterans.

Charity golf tournament to be held Sept. 12

Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services’ third annual golf tournament, sponsored by Outcome Resources, is Sept. 12 at 8 a.m. at Silverado Resort. For sponsorship opportunities and information, call 258-9080.

Ultra-Endurance bicycle race Oct. 18-19

Shannon Ridge Winery will host the final race of the 2008 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Ultra-Endurance Calendar. Titled the Shannon Ridge Showdown, the event will take place in Clearlake Oaks in Lake County, Oct. 18-19.

The Shannon Ridge Showdown Ultra-Endurance race will be a 16-hour competition and the course itself is approximately 7.5 miles in length with over 1,700 feet of climbing per lap.

The course route is a combination of single track, double track, fire access roads and vineyard rows.

This is the first time that a USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Ultra Endurance Calendar series race course has included vineyards as part of the course route. The race and course is designed, promoted and directed by endurance racers. Ultra-Endurance racing is one the fastest growing forms of mountain bike racing.

The race will begin in front of the Shannon Ridge tasting room on Highway 20 in Clearlake Oaks at 4 p.m. on Oct. 18 and will end at 8 a.m. on Oct. 19 in the mountain vineyards directly across from the home of winery owners Clay and Margarita Shannon.

On line registration will open March 1. A USA Cycling Mountain Bike race license is required to compete. Registration closes Oct. 11 or when racer limit is reached (300 racers maximum). Napa Golf Course offers lesson programs for couples, women and juniors

Napa Golf Course at Kennedy Park is offering a lesson schedule designed for couples, juniors and women.

• A class for boys and girls who are entering the ninth or 10th grades that are planning on playing high school golf. The class will be an hour of instruction and an informal nine-hole tournament following instruction.

• Couples golf Saturdays is a clinic designed for players of all caliber that would like to learn the game of golf with their husband, or wife, or significant other in a casual setting. Students should have some experience but it is not required. The fee is $150 per couple.

The five sessions will include fundamentals of golf and on-course instruction. All classes are one hour in duration and classes are limited to the first four couples.

It runs Sept. 6 to Oct. 4, from 10 to 11 a.m.

• A ladies night out clinic for those 18 and over has been the most popular clinic at Napa Golf Course. Attendees will enjoy a more relaxing atmosphere of learning. This class is for the beginner or the novice that is looking to improve their game.

The class runs Sept. 29 to Oct. 27, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $80.

• A ladies Sunday clinic is designed to assist participants to further their knowledge and skills and concentrate on the actual playing of the game.

Participants must have completed a “Ladies Night Out” clinic or have a knowledge of the game that is above the beginner level and own a set of golf clubs. The cost is $80.

Classes run Aug. 17 to Sept. 14, and Sept. 28 to Oct. 26, from 10 to 11:15 a.m.

High school football officials needed

The North Bay Officials Association, which serves Solano, Napa, Sonoma, Marin and Mendocino counties, needs high school officials for the 2008 football season.
