Napa Town and Country Fair attendance grew nearly 2 percent this year, perhaps benefiting from higher gas prices that had more people vacationing close to home.

Total attendance was 60,703, an increase of 1,347 from last year and the highest total in 10 years, Napa Valley Expo CEO Joe Anderson said.
Anderson credited economic concerns and a popular entertainment lineup for the strong gate. “In a tough economic time, gas prices being what they are, people are staying closer to home,” he said.

The fair opened with two popular acts, Manhattan Transfer and Tower of Power, that filled the Plaza Stage arena, with country and western singer Colin Raye Anderson doing well on Friday night, Anderson said. “Our entertainment lineup was strong,” he said. The concerts were free with the price of fair admission.
The Destruction Derby, a mainstay of the Saturday and Sunday lineups, bounced back with a 6.5 percent jump in attendance, Anderson said.

A Friday night, Mexican-themed rodeo and concert in the grandstand arena was not a success, drawing slightly more than 400 people, Anderson said. “I think the promoter probably lost money on it,” he said.
Both the Destruction Derby and the rodeo and concert event required an additional admission fee.

This year’s fair theme, Fiesta de Napa, caused a flap when it was announced in February. Critics accusing the fair of appealing to immigrants.

In the end, the controversy faded, Anderson said. “It was only a theme,” he said. The fair had the same mix of entertainment as always, he said.

The economic climate may have hurt the Junior Livestock Auction, where bids on animals totaled $662,435, down 20 percent from the year before, Anderson said.

Last year, the average animal sold for $1,775, or $8.18 per pound. This year’s average was $1,496, or $6.60 a pound, Anderson said.

“I think that’s every bit the economy,” he said. The number of animals put up for auction dropped 4 percent from 425 to 408.

Auction highlights included:

• Grand Champion Market Lamb: Nicole Timm, Browns Valley 4-H, selling for $17 a pound, or $2,448, to Rudd Wines Inc. and Press restaurant.

• Grand Champion Market Steer: Pookie McGlothern, Las Amigas 4-H, selling for $5.50 a pound, or $6,726, to the employees of Bell Products Inc.

• Supreme Champion Market Hog: James Regusci of St. Helena FFA, selling for $42 a pound, or $11,508, to Jason Lauritsen & Maher Viticulture Service.

• Grand Champion Market Goat: Madeleine Yoakum of 4-Leaf Clover 4-H, selling for $10 a pound, or $960, to Randal Wiig Vineyard Development.

• Grand Champion Broiler Meat Pen: Zachary Blackwood, 4-Leaf Clover 4-H, selling to Bob and Sylvia Pestoni for $550.

• Grand Champion Turkey Meat Pen: Katelyn Smith of Napa FFA selling to Andrews and Thornley for $900.

• Grand Champion Rabbit Meat Pen: Katelyn Smith of Napa FFA selling to Joe and Melanie Oberting for $500.

Homemaker of the year was awarded to Linda Feutz of Napa.

The karaoke winners were: Adult division, Jessica Adlawan, first place; Kristen VanDyke, second place; Adam Jobe, third place. In the junior division, the winners were: Alexia Clark, first; Malia Sittler, second, and Camille Markovich, third.

WestAmerica Bank, One Financial Plaza, won Decorated Lobby honors, while Community Projects won Decorated Window.

We dont nee another skate board park! This is what good community is all about!

Thank you to Joe Anderson for another great year! "

" This report stinks and we're not buying it. After all the flack the fair board has been getting they can alter any numbers they want and no one would know the better. We have the worst fair out of any of the surrounding counties and we need a whole new fair board.Joe Anderson is not a man that can make our fair what it used to be.He needs to step aside. I would like to see the fair back to what it was in the 70's and 80's when it was FUN. "

" Im glad the fair attendance was up, maybe that will secure the fair for another year and not turn it into another hotel or parking garage. I believe the attendance was up because there were more hispanic people because there are more in Napa than last year. Now let's move on and see what theme they will come up with for next year. You know none of us will be asked for our opion "

" Don't be patting yourselves on the back just yet. In reality the fair has been doing poorly compaired to years past. By their own admission with all the "staycationers" this fair should have blown the lid on previous years' attendance. A 2% increase is miniscule considering that the conditions were ripe for a much larger crowd.

The relatively paltry attendance at the themed rodeo and concert is most indicative of the impact of those who chose not to attend the 'fiesta de Napa'; the spike from the rest of y'all was to watch destruction derby, a truely American tradition. "

people can pile on the excuses such as the fair is lying about the attendance or it should have been even bigger but it was a great turnout especially considering the hundreds of comments predicting it's failure. "

Another note, what's really unfortunate is that even with a small 2% increase in attendance, livestock auction was down 20%.. Guess that does tell you who didnt attend the fair and who did.. Great job Joe Anderson for catering to a group who doesnt participate in buying livestock. Smart move! "

abouttime wrote on Aug 19, 2008 11:48 AM:

" Fair attendance was up 2% because the temperature was down and the price of gas was up. Locals took fewer vacations and took advantage of stuff in their own community. This is good.

However, it does not change the fact that fairs are a dying life form. Livestock sales were down, because it's just not something people relate to anymore. It will be down more next year. It is an anachronism of a bygone era.

Joe Anderson and his crew do a great job! But they are essentially putting lipstick on the pig that is the fairgrounds. It is however to valuable a property to be used only 5 days a year. There are many other south County venues the can accommodate the fair. The state needs to sell the property and we need to see it developed as part of the New Napa. Even the wet/dry bypass would be a great venue once it's completed.

I'm sorry Marine 1, we are not going back to the 70's or 80's. The fair, the community and all of us have moved on. You should to. "

It was the same as always. I think the fair comitee backed out of the whole fiesta de Napa theme without announcing it to the public. "

MarshaMarsha wrote on Aug 19, 2008 12:35 PM:

Joe Anderson is too modest to reveal that every vendor became a millionaire, the concerts were sold out and standing room only, every single person who played a broadway game won a huge stuffed animal, every bathroom was spotless, the lines at every ride were never more than 3 people long, and plentiful free parking assured that no one had to walk more than 100 feet to an entrance.

Why'd you leave all that stuff out of the report Joe? "

denied anybody from parking there during the five days of the fair and if my mom did not move the car they will have it towed. to save trouble I moved the car. but when I left the fair later that evening I went out the front gate and saw all the handicap spots full, I asked the guy in front why they are allowing the parking now there and he said because of the incident early in the day. it was with my mom and the i reason i think they changed there mind was because they found out they were wrong. because of what went on that morning I doubt that my family will ever go back "

" A little peace, people.... so quick to point fingers and hurl insults. Everyone is entitled to their opinions and reasons for attending, or not attending, the fair. That being said, there are a number of reasons why fair attendance has reportedly increased this year, many stated in the NVR article incluidng economic climate and people "staying close to home". Napa also saw an increase in population over last year. It is significant to note that the Mexican themed rodeo and the junior livestock auction did not do well. There are many variables that may or may not have impacted the success of these two programs - and all factors should be thoroughly reviewed by fair ogranizers. The article stated, "This year’s fair theme, Fiesta de Napa, caused a flap when it was announced in February. Critics accusing the fair of appealing to immigrants." which is a complete and total mis-statement of the concerns that critics expressed regarding the fair's theme. I wish the NVR had been more accurate in that statement. The fair is changing to keep pace with the changing community. Some like it, some don't. Those of us who don't, will find another means of fun and summer entertainment. "

" abouttime : I could not disagree with you more. Where would the money come from to build something in south county. We already can't fix our roads. The fairgrounds is not just used 5 days a year. Our schools have crab feeds,Halloween parties, and other fund raising events ther because that is the only reasonable place to have these events to hold that many people. The county schools use it for storage every summer. There is also a school and bingo that supports alot of churches and charities. The fair makes money off of All the events they hold there year round. The fair board could advertise it some to attract more events every year but that would require some effort that this fair board is not willing to supply. I made a reference to the 70's and 80's fair only to say that was when things were organized and fun, Not the time erra. If we did loose the fairgrounds it would be a terrible loss for everyone in Napa. Where do you suggest the above mentioned(fund raisers, school, bingo, crab feeds,20/30 club halloween party, gifts & time etc.) go? I think you are only thinking along what you want. I'm trying to think of the good for all Napa! "

Next time try something more positive that appeals to every person regardless of ethnicity, religion etc. Then maybe the kids who work so hard for the fair won't feel the consequences. 2% is one thing. 20% is another. " Can there be an intelligent dialogue here without all of the chest-thumping and insult throwing? Geez, the quality of post content is declining at a rapid rate - almost not worth participating anymore. The junior livestock auction is supported by the wealthy of Napa Valley - the kids are 4-Hers and a good number of them come from wealthy winery-owner families. If you have ever been to the live auction, you will see wineries and local organizations buying the livestock - your average Joe doesn't buy their groceries in this manner. The wealthy of Napa Valley are important contributors to the fairs success or demise because they offer more bang for the buck - fewer attendees but a lot more money to contribute. The point here is that, one must remember who the bread and butter is. SO, while attendance may be up - it will be interesting to see if revenue has increased as well - I'd guess that it is not since the livestock auction performed poorly this year. "

Many kids lost money on their steers though - it is just so expensive to raise a steer and the money just wasn't what it had been in previous years. And thanks to the JLAC for the $2000 scholarships to so many deserving kids! And for all the others offering scholarships to support the kids in ag and to all the buyers who support this event! "

Farmgirl wrote on Aug 19, 2008 8:26 PM:

" Winewoman -
Some of the kids raising animals are from FFA (the local chapter being at Vintage High School)- and very few are wealthy. A lot of the local 4 H ers have very normal families also. St. Helena FFA seems to have more moneyed families - and they make better money on their animals because of better connections. But the animals that the Napa FFA raises are the best meat around and some are purchased by families who want to support the kids as well as companies who want to support ag in the community. SOME of the meat from the "winningest" hogs tastes really bad as it has been given a muscle enhancement supplement that make the meat inedible. Napa FFA also raised the hogs that were purchased by local service organizations and the meat was donated to Salvation Army and the butcher was really impressed with the carcasses on those hogs! Although the sales were down a bit, I would not count the auction a failure. It is all part of farming and raising animals. You learn to take the good years with the bad years - a lesson that kids in ag need to learn! "

My friend who has a booth in the fair every year said that there wasn't nearly the amount of traffic in the booths and auction houses that there is in the past. He's not even gonna do it next year, and did you notice the empty booths. The fair board needs to realize where the bread is butterred and quit biting the hand that feeds them. The illegal immigrant community is not the "TARGET MARKET" for most fair venders in booths and auctions. "

I do question the report of attendance breaking records.
From reading here, people reported the lack of crowds. I also asked everyone I knew that did go. They also reported light attendance.
Here's my question:
What did Mr Anderson base his numbers on?
Was it actual "body count" at the gates?
Or was it revenue?
Of course it was a success from other years if you go by the $$ spent from what people are writing here about the prices. "
