Mervyns announced Wednesday it is closing its Napa store within 90 days.

Hey Mervyns shoppers, where are you going to shop now?
What things did you go to Mervyns for, and where will you get them now?

" I will probably go shop at pac sun/zumies or shop on the internet; amazon.com etc.. "

" There is only Mervyns in Town. Target and Wal-Mart are just to cluttered to shop for clothes, except maybe t-shirts. "

" Well it's not like they had great clothes or anything of interest. The average Napkin will just shop at Target or Walmart if they were shopping at Mervyns anyways. I can't believe this is even a question. Mervyns was always terrible, I hope they take the seedy people around the place with them as well. "

" I'll most likely head West to Petaluma (Kohls, Outlets, Mervyn's) and/or the City for now. Mervyn's was so convenient for quick gifts, but perhaps we can give Rogal some credit here...he bought a location that already has utilities connected to it! I say let's give him a chance to WOW us Napans.

Hey, maybe HE can even help force the Napa Creek project to happen earlier with all the Democratic backing that he carries. Now how's that for strategy?!?!?!? "

" McCoulous is great. Why does everyone act like they don't exist? They have many things at sale prices as well as the higher end clothing.
As far as Nordstoms goes, this town would/could never support a Nordstroms or a Macy's for that matter.
Napans get very snooty about where they are willing to shop ya know. "

" Sounds like a bunch of spoiled brats cryin the blues. You oughta be grateful to have One store where you can spend the day trying to make up your mind on what to buy. "Let's see, blue or green"? Americans are squandering our God Given freedoms ! I'm sorry, but I don't sense any gratitude in their hearts. I see them ,always comparing themselves to another. Is that what it's all about ? I'll pass on it ! "

" For many of us, Mervyn's, Walmart, Target, and McC...'s do not have the sizes that look best on us. A Tall shirt and size 14 shoes. Napa (and national) retailers have stopped supporting odd sizes. Thank goodness for the Casual Male in Vacaville.

But seriously..... How many of you (Napkins) shop in stores? Except for food, cleaning supplies and kitchen stuff (Shackford's) all my purchases happen on line. Don't yours?

No one in my family have bought shoes in a brick and mortar store for years. "

" It's sad whan a store that has been in business for so long shuts its doors. Merill's Drugs, Carithers, The Working Man and many others closed their doors, and we found other stores.

When Rothman's and Wigger Brother's closed that was the end of the Men's Shop for Napa. I know Craig Williams is trying but it's just not the same. If you are looking for a men's suit you have no choice but to shop outside of Napa.

What we lose when these local stores go out of business is not so much access as it is customer service. And customer service is a rare commodity these days.

I have tried to shop for clothes online and through catalogs. But after paying all the shipping charges to return items that do not fit, it is faster and less expensive to drive out of town. "

" I am very sorry to see Mervyn's go. McCaulou's store has isles and areas between clothes that I can't take my mother in a wheelchair in the store. I have purchased clothing, shoes, kitchen items, bedding, towels, baby clothes - almost every department. They also carry large sizes. No other store in town does. I would go to the Mervyn's in Fairfield, but they are closing that too. I will do my shopping online, and occasionally visit the mall in Fairfield to go to Penney's/Sears, or go to Kohl's. I will continue to shop at Shackford's. My heart goes out to the employees who will be losing their jobs just before the holidays, and I worry about the state of downtown shopping in Napa. So much for shopping locally. "

" In spite of Napa's population being fairly decently sized, we simply can't sustain an Old Navy or its like. And we aren't a draw for the surrounding towns because they are fairly self sufficient, or they have a bigger or better draw just on the other side of them (San Fran or Sacramento).

Besides, I kinda get the feeling that the powers that be don't really want Napa to become a draw from the likes of Vallejo or Fairfield or even Vacaville. We can take that however we would like since they will never admit to it, anyway.

That being said... Napa's downtown ruling party clearly have their own ideas and since the actual downtown isn't that big when it comes to "downtowns", I doubt they want a large anchor store like Old Navy, or even a Nordstrom to be able to set a specific overall tone for the entire downtown area, as well it would. And besides, having a big corporation like that smack dab in the middle of your empire means its no longer your empire, per se. Those big corporate stores tend to have more than a bit of pull once they're in your midst.

Our Napa elite seem to prefer the idea of those easy to manage boutique/specialty shops that whisper, charm while boasting an heir of sophistication...

Let's face the music. They're separating the "wheat from chaff", folks. If you can't afford to shop at their stores, or dine in their restaurants... Well, they never intended for you to be a part of their plan in the first place. It's as simple as that. "

" Anywhere out of town. The concord or fairfield malls are OK. There's always rocklin or Union Square. Its sad to see that you need to go out of your own town to shop because city and county leaders cater to tourists that don't even live here. Mervyns was convenient for my family and they had a much better selection than wal-mart or target. "

" Please.

The real question should be...

Come on now, you know what the real question is...

Where you gonna go to the BATHROOM when you're downtown?

Huhn?

As for shopping, since I work out of town, that's where I'll shop. I love Kohl's, which is a fancier version of Mervyns--excellent shoe selection (huge) and decent work clothes. I also like Ross but wish it was a Marshalls or TJ Maxx instead. So many of my clothes come from Target, and Wal-Mart has the CUTEST Ocean Pacific teen shirt selection now! If you grew up in the 70's and 80's you know how cool the OP is! But for Levi's you gotta go to Kohl's now that Mervyn's is gone, or shop on line. I like stores that allow you to return items to their stores, and Kohl's allows this. I like the outlets for the kids' clothes, particularly Roxy/Quicksilver. Well, even Costco has clothes. McCaulou's has really decent stuff at good prices, actually. Every time I go there I find a good deal.

I can't get into the idea of spending a ton of money at Nordstrom. I can't see Napa supporting a Nordstrom or Macy's--this is not a super wealthy town.

But I'll miss Mervyn's. "
