Starbucks brewing at Jefferson and Lincoln

After years in limbo, a corner at one of Napa’s busiest intersections appears to have a new lease on life.

The northeast corner of Jefferson and Lincoln, just steps from Napa High School, will become home to Napa’s 10th Starbucks cafe.
The store is scheduled to open in November, according to Alan Richardson, with Starbucks’ corporate office. Seventeen to 25 employees will be hired to work at the cafe.

Starbucks also becomes one of Napa County’s newest property owners.
In April 2008, Michael Mak, owner of the one-third-acre lot, sold the property to Starbucks for $650,000.

Buying the site outright is also unusual for the chain. Starbucks typically leases its store locations.
“Purchasing property is just one of the venues we use to build new stores. A very low percentage of our openings are done this way,” wrote Richardson.

The opening comes as a surprise, given the chain’s recent announcement that it will close 600 stores across the U.S.. However, Richardson said, “We believe that there are still desirable location opportunities in the U.S., both in new and existing markets.”

Workers have already broken ground at the corner, which in the past has proven difficult to develop.

In 2006 Mak planned to build a 2,300 square foot building with two retail spaces, one a Starbucks. But he did not proceed, saying he found city requirements to create traffic signal modifications and a right turn lane on Lincoln cost-prohibitive.

Kevin Eberle, senior planner with the city of Napa planning division, said new plans for the site indicate a smaller, single-tenant building of 1,744 square feet. Development conditions, including the right turn lane and signals, remain the same, said Eberle. Entrances on Lincoln and Jefferson allow for through traffic. The cafe will not include a drive-through.

The last Starbucks to open in Napa came in two years ago at Redwood Plaza, near Vallerga’s.

" 10? Not too sure about that.

One by Home Depot
One by Nob Hill
One by Wendy's
One by Vallerga's
and the new one...

You might stretch it and add one by the new Walmart in Am Can and another by the Safeway, but those are technically in American Canyon.

Please clarify. Did I miss some? "

" THANK GOODNES!!

The only south Napa location is ALWAYS packed! I don't think this is the 10th starbucks in Napa! There's only one in south Napa, and OVER THREE on trancas alone!

I'm VERY worried about the traffic situation though! That intersection is already tough enough - add a bunch of high schoolers earlier in the morning, or mid day and you've got a disastourous cup of joe! "

" Starbucks Locations.

One on Lincoln and Jefferson
One in South Napa next to Panda Express/Home Depot
One next to Nob Hill
One next to Wendy's
One in Redwood Plaza
One inside North Target
One inside North Safeway
One inside South Lucky's

Not to try and be mean, but where are the other two? I actually had a bit of fun trying to think about where the others are! "

Maybe the writer doesn't realize the coffee stand inside Lucky's stores are no longer affiliated with Starbucks. "

When will the planners of Napa learn that just because something makes money doesn't mean it's a good thing for Napa......sigh......same old story just a different business.... "

Stick with the non-fat lattes or small black coffees, or teas. Maybe half-caff. Don't want to interfere with your sleep at such a young age. Well, ever, really. You can treat yourself without breaking the bank or your diet. "

Looks like Napa High is going to have to make a rule about coffee in the classroom now. Traffic is going to be a nightmare too. Can you just imagine, you will have the high school traffic in the morning along with the coffee drinkers traffic trying to get in there. Its going to be an intersection to avoid now. "

Peets, I love the atmosphere, but I'm not a fan of their too-strong coffee.

Viva Starbucks! I think this is a smart move on their part. Hopefully the kids will walk over instead of driving. It would make more sense to get your parking spot first, anyway, right? "

It's all about choice, which is what American capitalism is about.
Buttercream has a wider selection of pastries and in bulk, plus sit-down dining, unlike Starbucks. If Buttercream wanted to compete with Starbucks, they could offer coffee to go quickly, in cute pink and white paper cups, maybe with a walk-up window, or something. "

The bigger problem involves the heavy sugar and fat content of these products. If students stick to black coffee, it might actually be beneficial in an educational setting. "
