Thank goodness it's Thursday?

Miracle of miracles, the world did not end when Chefs Market moved to Thursday nights. In fact, Chefs Market did not even meet its demise.

Instead, strong crowds of 3,000 to 4,000 people filled First Street in downtown Napa on what had otherwise been quiet nights for business, taking in the music and the food and the parade of Napa life with more civility and community spirit than was evident in recent Friday night seasons, and with less ruckus and inebriation.
After the controversy over the Friday markets, the complaints from local restaurateurs and the debate over what to do, it seems the merchants found a winning recipe.

The merchants who sponsor the event, the bands that perform, the vendors who serve, the citizens who attend and the police who patrol all deserve a slice of the credit for the smooth success of this year’s Chefs Market.
Next year promises to be better yet, according to the Downtown Merchants Association’s Craig Smith.

In a Register article last week, Smith projected that visitors may spend more at next year’s Thursday market, as they tend to offer more support once events have become firmly established. He also said the merchants plan to return to a 15-week schedule next year, after this year’s trial run of just 11 weeks.
The success of the Thursday night market is another promising sign for downtown Napa, which is also drawing lots of people to free Friday night concerts in Veteran’s Memorial Park. Within the next year or year and a half, more change is on the horizon as three major developments — the Riverfront commercial and condo building on Main Street, the Napa Square office and retail building on First Street and the Avia hotel across from Napa Square — will open for business.

Still, there are signs of struggle downtown. The closing of Bookends on Coombs Plaza earlier this year was a sad chapter, and First Street is still hamstrung by too many empty storefronts.

Nonetheless, the successful Thursday night Chefs Market gives merchants a great kick-off into the weekend, and is a strong sign that locals will support downtown.

In the end, it appears that Thursdays are better than Fridays.

" I guarantee that if those empty stores were occupied by food/entertainment related businesses, they would thrive. "

" Sorry to say, the Chef's Market was pathetic. There were no stands in the Town Center where the Chef's Market originated. Not much of a selection and limited entertainment. Plus a month cut off the schedule. It took us about 30 minutes, including walking through the Town Center, to see and hear everything. "

" I had a great time, yes it was a little slower at the start of the evening but things really got hopping by 6:30 every night. A lot of venders were pretty much done by 8:30. I did meet some wonderful people visiting our town who were surprised at such a great event in the center of town. Locals were out in droves and the whole event had a festive air to it. The people that attended shopped, sipped wine and wandered around some great booths. Yes there were a few lame-o tables. I didn’t get the church groups or banks but whatever. The kids were well behaved for the most part but they need something better to do than hanging outside of Mervyns. All in all I am kind of amiss with nothing to do on Thursdays now. Great Job Craig and even bigger shout out to the staff that kept things chiming along smoothly. Next year I would like to see a wrap party for all those working it! Remember you make your own fun. And I had a blast!! "

" It only looked crowded because it was less than half its usual size. I thought it was a dissapointment. I went 3 times. The mob of teenagers were all behind mervyns, as usual, but more condensed...not a good thing. At least at the larger market they did join the rest of the community for short forays into the event. The shortened season was also not a good thing. I think it will see its end if not next year, than the one after that. The merchants do not have the right attitude....most of the stores were closed.....not a good way to attract potential business from the market crowd. I really wonder about the downtown...... "

" Thursdays were fine, but more variety of food please. Went to the Chef's Market drooling for something off of a BBQ, had to leave and go to Red Rock to get my fix. A trip to the Chef's Market should result in a dilema of what to choose to eat. It's not called Boutique Market or Vintner's Market, it's called CHEF'S Market. Food. "

" The struggle of Bookends...they had the WORST selection of books. We would drive out to Barnes and Noble rather than shop at local bookstores. I wasn't surprised to see an empty store, just surprised they lasted as long as they did. "

" Since we have to rise at 4:30AM on
Friday mornings Thursday were absolutely OUT for us. So we never went this year. However we have a large collection of Molly's Angels wine glasses to remind us of when the Chef's Market was COOL and our "Thing to Do" on Friday nights. Too bad, we'll spend our money elsewhere. ~Ruff "

" I used to really enjoy going to Chef's Market. I was not big on the idea of switching it to Thursday, but decided to give it a chance. As it turned out, having it on Thursday was not as bad as I thought it would be, but the event itself was very disappointing compared to prior years. I went four times to make sure that I did not happen to hit it on a bad day, but that was not the case. The lack of quality vendors, musicians, and food selection left little to be desired. And please, could we leave religion out of the Chef's Market? I agree that if it does not greatly improve next year, it is done. Way to spoil a good thing. "

" I was not big on the idea of moving it to Thursday nights as many werent. I went ahead and gave it a try. To say the least I was dissapointed. It wasnt as big as it was in past years and a couple of my favorite food places were not there. There definetly wasnt a ton of people, which made it nice for walking around, but at the same time, those people add to the energy of the event. After that one time experiance, I didnt go. A couple times I would say I would go, and then completely forget that it was on Thursday until it was too late. I would love to see it moved back to Fridays. I think that it was a nice way to unwind from a long week. With it on Thursdays, it doesnt really serve that purpose because you still have to get up and go to work the next morning. That and dont most tourists come on the weekends anyways? "

" Ruff,
I completely agree with your post. How about that for a change! Write this down in your daily diaries folks. The Friday market WAS cool and the place to be, a welcome end to the work week and a great kickoff for the weekend. Too bad, so sad it is gone. "
