Two arrested for graffiti in Napa

Two individuals were arrested early this morning on suspicion of tagging numerous locations in Napa, according to police.
Alvin Maurice Thomas, 20, and Jena Danielle Cloud, 19, were picked up at a home in the 1500 block of Menlo Avenue, following two days of investigation into the suspects, according to Napa police.
Thomas is responsible for tagging with the moniker of “Samo,” police stated, while Cloud reportedly uses the moniker “imajen,” while tagging.
Police said the probe was launched July 7.
During the investigation, police stated evidence was recovered through a probation search. Arrest warrants were obtained and the suspects have been booked.

These two suspects were pretty stupid. "Samo" is the last 4 letters of "Thomas" spelled backwards, and "imajen" most likely refers to Suspect #2's first name. Brilliant. Hopefully these geniuses are held financially responsible for spraying their signatures all over town. "

19 and 20 years old, tagging up the town. They certainly amounted to something, didn't they?
I'm assuming that tagging is the least of their offenses when it comes to their criminal history.
Normal human beings don't suddenly become "taggers" at ages 19 and 20. These two (And others like them) clearly have "issues." "

Fine these people heavily to help pay for graffiti on private property. Make them also serve long sentences cleaning graffiti. Pay them after a certain period of time and put 70% of that pay into an account for cleaning private property. "

At age 18 I was arrested, with others, who were shoplifting , spent 4 hours in jail, paid $600 in court fees and was released. How should I have been punished? Have you ever had this experience?
At age 17, I peed on the side of a highway? Illegal? How should I have been punished? Have you ever had this experience?
At age 23, I was drunk and not able to drive, gave my keys to my friend to drive, they...unfortunately...were as drunk although neither of us nor 3 other people in the car knew it. They lost their license for TWO YEARS! How should I have been punished? Have you had this experience?

But your side of the story makes you appear like an impulsive young woman with an attitude problem.
I like peace signs: on my shirt, on removable car stickers, on my own private property if that's where I choose to put them. Mixing peace signs with graffiti is degrading to the concept of peace. Peace is not about "forcing" your philosophy on others; it's not about "getting in people's faces"; it's certainly not about wearing a blatant attitude. Peace is subliminal. Some people wear it comfortably in their personalities. Peace can speak without words, but when words are spoken, they're a gentle motion, not a tidal wave.
Grafitti is not "peace". It's a passive form of aggression, the kind which permeates outward and imposes itself on a community. You're not exactly holding someone down and punching them directly in the face. Rather, graffiti is the equivalent of spitting in the face of an entire community.
And so what I think you have lost touch with is the sense of "community". Perhaps your 3.5 GPA mind can brainstorm on ways of teaching your peers to value community; not just your self preoccupied peer community but the larger one outside of those well trodden lines dug so deep you have nowhere to move except in a circle.
You can start by apologizing to the bigger community. "
Selim wrote on Jul 30, 2008 12:09 PM:
And MatthewSeven, thanks oh so much for listing your criminal record. Just because you failed to learn your lesson (apparently numerous times), it doesn't make the rest of us unable to judge. I have made plenty of stupid mistakes...but very few have ever involved the police and NONE have every involved getting cuffed.
And judging IS the job of the community. What do you think "a jury of your peers" is? If the community at large doesn't take a stand for what it believes is right or wrong, then we'll be left with this "moral relativity" that just lets anything go. Graffiti, noise complaints, drunk driving, theft of property...hey, who are you to judge, right? Some folks simply do not find their own moral compass, and they need a little "state-funded assistance".
Simple solution: put these two vandals in orange jumpsuits and have 'em clean graffiti from one end of Napa to the other. "
steph wrote on Jul 30, 2008 12:13 PM:

Also when this is all over and you can once again have "VANDALISM PARAPHENALIA” (correct spelling paraphernalia), try getting in touch with Tourist HUH?Town>ha. He or she seems to be against tourism, business and money, but thinks that vandalism is art. AB 1767 by San Francisco Assemblywoman Fiona Ma mandates community service for a person who has committed a criminal act of graffiti vandalism, and AB 2609 by Los Angeles Assemblyman Mike Davis requires defendants convicted of graffiti vandalism to clean up or repair the defaced or damaged property.
AB 1767 will be tested in a San Francisco pilot program where violators of graffiti vandalism will be ordered to participate in a minimum of 24 hours of community service if they have reached a civil compromise with the victim. This law targets graffiti abatement service programs as the community service outlet for offenders and remains in effect until January 1, 2012.
Similarly, AB 2609 requires the court to order offenders paroled for a graffiti violation to clean up, repair or replace the damaged property. Defendants would also be required to keep the damaged property or another specified property in the community free of graffiti for up to one year. "
