Dental records needed to ID body found in Jeep

The use of dental records will be needed to positively identify the person who was found dead in a Jeep early Saturday morning.

The body was located after fire crews extinguished a one-acre brush fire along Mount Veeder Road.
“The body was severely burnt,” said Sheriff’s Capt. John Robertson. “We will have to rely on dental records,” for identification.

Robertson said it could take some time to get the information back on who the deceased is.
Fire crews first received a call at 12:30 a.m. Saturday about the fire.

The burnt remnants of a Jeep Wrangler were discovered once crews gained control of the fire, and a person was found inside the charred vehicle.
Cause of the fire is under investigation, but CalFire Battalion Chief David Shew said Sunday he believes the Jeep caused the surrounding vegetation to catch fire. The Jeep was parked perpendicular to the driveway with the front half of the vehicle on the pavement and the other on the brush.

" I would like to see more information on the Jeep. There are tons of people here who have custom jeeps with special parts on them that would survive a fire. Perhaps a little more information would get someone to speak about a missing person? "

" Here's a hint for local law enforcement, find out who the driver is by running the VIN. Unless the jeep was stolen, you should be able to find out quickly. "

" Law enforcement probably already has an idea of who it is, but positive identification is always necessary. Law enforcement doesn't need a "hint", I'm sure the VIN has already been run. "

" So how do you find a dentist with dental records...??? Every dentist in town gets a profile of the teeth of the deceased from the coroner? Then the dentist has to try and remember who had a molar that was repaired like the one in the X-ray from the coroner...???

Gotta be a pain in the butt for dentists, or their office staff..... "

" I agree with SouthNapa -- they must have an idea or a few ideas and will work from there. "

" No mention of the body being male or female which leads me to believe they know who it is and want to notify the next of kin before releasing the identity. "

" I suppose it's too much to hope that the corps had a custom 'grill' with his name on it. In diamonds, of course. "

SouthNapa wrote on Jul 28, 2008 9:18 PM:

" Of course the police know who it is. There is no point in checking dental records if they don't know who they are searching for.

There was probably enough evidence at the scene to give the police an idea of who they needed to pull dental records on. If this was a case of a John or Jane Doe, the police would continue to investigate and/or ask for the public's help. The police clearly don't need help on this case.

I hope the victim didn't suffer too much. I can't imagine a worse way to go, and I hope he or she can rest in peace. "

" On Saturday Napa lost a man committed to his community. He was a friend, educator, coach and mentor to many.

Thank you Napa Register for not running the victims name. This has given his family and friends an opportunity to reflect and decide what is best for the immediate future.

It is amazing how much time people have to post their own personal "thoughts" on what "really" happened.

Maybe next time they should consider that this was a peaceful man who committed his life to many others. Through working as an educator he influenced others lifes and gave up so much of his own in doing so.

Maybe he was battling something within himself (cancer) and out of pure exhaustion from his treatments fell asleep at the wheel of his vehicle (at home) returning from a trip.

In time most will learn the identity of this man. If he ever crossed their paths, they too will take a minute to reflect.

Accidents happen. No conspircies here. "

" Napathoughts.......Thank you for your heartfelt post. It is appreciated, as you know how peoples minds can work. It is a comfort to know that foul play was not a factor here. I am sorry for your loss of such a well cared for friend. "

" NapaThoughts.Thank You for your clarification and explanation.
In the cyberworld and blogs anonymity, cynicism, stupidity all seem to run rampant. Second guessing facts and lame attempts at humor are really prevalent. The loss of any life also means that a family and friends are grieving an enormous loss of someone in their lives.

When did we as a society become so callous and insensitive??? My prayers to the firefighters and the family of the fire victim. "

" He was one of the best: Mentor, Teacher, Coach, Friend. He loved his mountain and he greatly loved his "sons." We will remember his zealous joy for traveling, listening to Bach, drinking good wine and having meaningful conversations with loved ones. Thank you for everything. You are right Old Man- - -I am a very lucky girl. We love you and miss your dearly. Forever rest in peace. "

" This is my relative. I loved him very very much and will miss him greatly.I regret that my children did not get to spend the amount of time with him I was hoping for. My family is deeply hurting, as I am sure are his friends. I wish people like plepgeat would not ever bother speaking on a matter that dosn't concern them. I know my uncle is in a better place now and I hope his friends take comfort in knowing that. Thank you napathoughts for your kind words, you obviously knew him well. "

" what a tragic loss to the community.

the victim was my brothers best friend, and was his high school teacher from back in the early 70's. i too, was lucky to have met him and enjoy his smile, infectious enthusiasm for life, and the outdoors.

instead of crying for our loss, we should all smile for having known him.

fare thee well... "
